DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:   Under the supervision of Director of Community Planning, provide project management and planning support to the Community Planning Division of the Cambridge Community Development Department. The Project Planner will participate in a variety of activities in general support of the Community Planning activities of the department. The Project Planner will:
  • Manage significant land use planning projects that include balancing and coordinating goals of diverse planning disciplines such as urban design, economic development, housing, transportation and open space, with a strong component of public engagement and managing diverse stakeholder input;
  • Supervise review of development projects related to the city’s green building and other sustainability requirements/guidelines such as LEED/Article 22.000 (Sustainable Design and Development section of the City zoning ordinance), and climate change adaptation;
  • Represent the Department in a variety of planning processes which may be initiated by Community Development, other City departments, the public or private property owners.  Projects may include a variety of urban planning and zoning related processes.
  • Carry out other related duties, as assigned
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:Successful candidates will have a graduate degree in city planning, architecture or a related field, at least five years of experience in a municipal (or comparable) context managing planning studies involving multi-disciplinary teams including outside consultant teams; have thorough knowledge of city planning principles, excellent project management skills, excellent writing and oral presentation skills, broad experience working with boards and/or community groups and strong organizational/administrative skills. Successful candidates will be able to meet deadlines and work with a broad range of individuals in a fast-paced environment. Experience with diverse community groups required.  Knowledge of Cambridge is helpful. LEED-AP and a thorough understanding of environmental sustainability goals preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Work involves frequent evening meetings, requiring travelling to and through the city to project locations, driving and walking.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
WORK  ENVIRONMENT:  Work involved is both indoors is in a professional office setting and outdoors at project sites.
RATE:           $67,989 - $90,266/year   + excellent benefits.
