Budget & Tax Policy Initiative

Voices for Illinois Children


The Budget & Tax Policy Initiative (BTPI) conducts research and analysis on state fiscal issues in Illinois, with a focus on policies affecting low- and moderate-income families. A major source of information for policymakers, advocates, and the media, BPTI aims to influence public debate with timely, credible, and accessible policy analysis.


BPTI is a project of Voices for Illinois Children, a non-partisan, statewide, multi-issue advocacy organization.

BTPI is a member of the State Fiscal Analysis Initiative, a network of more than 40 state-level non-profit organizations coordinated by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities in Washington, D.C.


Responsibilities

• Conduct research and analysis on fiscal policy issues, as well as substantive program areas such as education, health care, human services, and family economic security.

• Analyze state budget and revenue data, as well as demographic, social, and economic data.

• Write policy reports, issue briefs, fact sheets, e-mail alerts, op-ed pieces, and other related materials.

• Give presentations to policymakers, advocacy groups, community organizations, business groups, and other audiences.

• Provide technical assistance in response to requests from policymakers and advocates.


Qualifications

• Interest in and knowledge of budget and tax policy, as well as the policymaking process.

• Strong analytical skills, including conceptualizing issues, using relevant information and data, and evaluating policy options.

• Excellent writing skills, including ability to discuss public policy issues in clear, concise, and cogent language.

• Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences, including news media, about complex policy issues.

• Graduate degree in public policy or related field.

• Experience in a public policy setting is strongly preferred.
