City of Highland Park Planning Intern Position (Paid)

Salary: $15.20 Hourly
Job Type: Temporary Full-time
Location: Public Services Building; 1150 Half Day Rd.; Highland Park, Illinois

Description Primary Purpose: The City of Highland Park is seeking a Planning Intern to assist with planning, zoning, special studies and other planning projects as may be necessary to assist the professional planning staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Meets with subdivision applicants and processes subdivision applications. Records plats in recorder of deeds office and tracks subdivision plat preparation and other documents in a computer database.
  • Assists professional planning staff in the collection of data and the preparation of staff reports, presentations, and public notification data.
  • Acts as Planner of the Day on a rotating basis to answer general planning and zoning questions of the general public.
  • Assists staff representatives during public participation events or public meetings.
  • Creates files and databases to organize planning records.
  • Drives an automobile into the field for photography and other data collection or delivery tasks.
Education and Experience:
Enrollment in a master's degree program in planning, architecture, landscape architecture, public policy or other related field. Previous paid employment for 12 months (may be non-consecutive) is preferred.

Supplemental Information:
Work Environment: The work site is an office setting with minimal noise. Some field work is involved that requires driving a passenger vehicle, walking, and recording of information. There is regular public interaction via the telephone and in person.

Tools and Equipment Used: Office equipment used includes, but is not limited to: personal computer (with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and Power Point), copier, printer, scanner, facsimile machine, postage machine, calculator and telephone.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, hear, operate equipment, and carry boxes, cases, files or other small objects that weight up to 25 pounds. The employee is occasionally required to walk; use hands and finger motion, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

Must possess excellent communication skills in both written and verbal form; a high skill level in keyboarding and a working knowledge of computers and modern office practices and procedures. Must be able to interact with the public in a polite and calm manner and meet deadlines.

Must be able to consistently exercise good judgment, maintain confidentiality, and make responsible decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures; perform limited amount of basic work independently, operating a personal computer with the software and programs necessary to perform the work of the division.

Must be able to establish and maintain an effective professional demeanor with elected officials, supervisors, employees and the general public.
