Position Reports to: Nutrition Policy Manager

The Fund for Public Health in New York, Inc. (FPHNY) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is dedicated to the advancement of the health and well-being of all New Yorkers. To this end, in partnership with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), FPHNY implements programs to address pressing public health needs, fosters private sector support to enhance health and health care, and helps educate the public regarding the protection of individual, family and community health.

The Fund for Public Health in New York (FPHNY) seeks a Food Policy Analyst in anticipation of a major five-year funding opportunity, i.e. a Community Transformation Grant, from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This funding opportunity will support an integrated set of complementary evidence-based activities to bring about policy, environment, program, and infrastructure changes to improve health outcomes by preventing the leading causes of death and disability across the life span for all New Yorkers, particularly those who experience disparities in health.

This position is contingent upon receipt of funding which is expected in mid September 2011. In addition, it is the intention that any individual hired by FPHNY will become a DOHMH employee during the term of the Community Transformation Grant, subject to meeting all DOHMH civil service qualifications and New York City residency requirements and receipt of all necessary approvals.

The Nutrition Strategy Program at the New York City Department of Health develops new models for serving healthful food in a range of venues, including but not limited to schools, hospitals, and restaurants. Leading the National Salt Reduction Initiative and developing innovative approaches to improving the food environment, such as the New York City Food Standards, are a key part of the program's activities. POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Analyst reports to the Nutrition Policy Manager and is responsible for providing technical assistance and support for implementing the NYC Food Standards. The Analyst will work closely with City agencies on the implementation of the Standards. Fieldwork will include travel throughout all five NYC boroughs.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Support implementation of the Standards and troubleshoot implementation challenges.
* Fieldwork may include visits to hospitals, parks, worksites and other organizations.
* Conduct onsite reviews to ensure compliance with the Standards.
* Provide other administrative and logistics support for overall implementation of NYC Food Standards.
* Write materials as needed, including policy briefs, research papers, website content, and reviews of scientific articles.
* Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
* A Master's degree with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological or environmental science or in Public Health.

PREFFERED SKILLS:
* The position requires excellent communication and writing skills, comfort with translating academic research into policy, and a desire to work in a team environment on a broad range of integrated policy initiatives.
* Ability to communicate in a second language, highly desirable
* Knowledge of the local communities, and local organization leadership, also desirable
