Description:

Active Transportation Alliance is searching for a talented individual to serve as the North Suburban Coordinator. This individual will be responsible for building relationships with key constituents, elected officials, municipal staff and community-based organizations in north suburban communities (Cook County suburbs east of Interstate 90, and all of Lake and McHenry counties). Under the general supervision of the Director of Education and Advocacy, the North Suburban Coordinator’s primary responsibilities are to build membership, secure contractual work and advocate for effective policy change in the region. The selected individual will join a team of four suburban coordinators who work throughout the metropolitan region.

Essential Duties and Accountabilities

Policy Advancement
• Coordinate with partner agencies and organizations on policy alignment and strategy.
• Craft customized policy language for individual communities.
• Promote policy adoption among local and regional governments, and school districts.

Planning and Consulting
• Work with in-house planners and consultants to secure contractual work.
• Provide excellent client services.

Organizational Advancement
• Conduct outreach and promote membership.
• Produce local events to promote Active Transportation Alliance.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

• Participate in Active Trans obligatory organizational events and activities.
• Frequent travel within region.
• Evening and weekend meeting participation.
• Participate in Basic Traffic Cycling instruction (according to individual ability to do so).
Qualifying Experience
Standard for all Positions:
• A passion for the transformational nature of bicycling, walking and transit on community livability and sustainability.
• A commitment to Active Transportation Alliance mission, vision and goals.

Specific to the Position:
• Demonstrated policy development experience at local or regional level.
• Deep knowledge of the north suburban communities.
• Relationships with key officials in the region.
• Superior communications skills, including written, presentational and public relations.
• Bachelor’s degree required.
• A minimum of three years experience working in the region in a related field.

Preferred Experience

• A minimum of five years experience working in the region in a related field.
• Degree in Public Administration, Public Policy or Urban Planning.
