Job Description
Chapin Hall seeks candidates for the Harold A. Richman postdoctoral research fellowship aimed at strengthening the intellectual and research qualifications of outstanding scholars interested in applied research careers focusing on child, youth, and family well-being. The postdoctoral fellowship will provide new scholars with advanced research training through participation on Chapin Hall research projects; time and resources to explore and develop independent research ideas; and mentoring by nationally recognized researchers in the field, at Chapin Hall and the University of Chicago. The selected individual(s) will have the opportunity to be involved with research design, development of data collection instruments and their implementation, data analyses and write-up of study results.
For the current application period, we are particularly looking for candidates interested in the following areas:
- Early childhood: early childhood education and school readiness, literacy and language development, mental health.
- Youth and young adults: teen pregnancy prevention, youth violence prevention, transition to adulthood for vulnerable populations, workforce development.
- Families: employment supports for working parent (e.g. child care), access to and pathways between public systems by low-income families and children.
- Child welfare and related systems.

This is an in-residence, two-year term program.

Job Requirements
The program is open to individuals who received their PhD between January 1, 2007 and August 31, 2011. The degree must be in an appropriately related discipline, for example, public policy, social work, economics, human development, education policy, statistics, epidemiology etc. The qualified applicant will have three years of research experience (dissertation-related research is acceptable) with experience conducting empirical research in the context of child, youth, or family policy.
There must be strong evidence of the potential for success in publishing and obtaining research grants. Interested candidates should submit a C.V., a 5–7 page personal statement (1.5 spacing) outlining completed research, work in progress, research interests, and professional goals, a scholarly writing sample (not to exceed 30 pages), and contact information for three references. Please note, the references provided by applicants who are selected for an interview may be asked to submit a written recommendation.
Applications must be received by January 31, 2011. Notice will be given to the successful applicant in March-April 2011. The Fellow must be able to begin the position between July 1 and September 2011.
The Fellow will receive $52,000 per calendar year and an opportunity to participate in the University of Chicago’s benefit program. Moving expenses are the responsibility of the individual. The individual may not hold any other paying positions or appointments during the period they are participating in the Chapin Hall Postdoctoral Fellowship program.
