Sustainability Program Manager – Navy Pier

Who: Navy Pier, Inc. (NPI) is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation established in 2011 to maintain and oversee the redevelopment at Navy Pier.

What: Sustainability Program Manager – Development Department. A sustainability program manager supports the implementation of sustainability programs across the organization or on various projects throughout the organization. They are expected to foster a positive image about the organization in the public eye and internally, encouraging sustainability thinking in the employee base at all levels and ideally to examine ways of cost-saving while promoting such green credentials.
The sustainability program manager will advise our organization on how to minimize our impact on the environment and, in some cases, oversee the delivery of impact reduction strategies. They typically develop and then measure the success of the schemes for waste management, renewable energy, recycling, and pollution reduction and prevention. Specific job tasks include:

Who: The Energy Action Network (EAN) is a multi-stakeholder, collective impact network of leaders across a diversity of sectors - business, government, non-profit, utility, higher education, and finance – seeking to transform Vermont’s energy system to achieve the state goal of meeting 90% of total energy needs through efficiency and renewables by 2050.

What: EAN’s Program Director fills a central leadership role in the Network as we work together to transform Vermont’s energy system to one based on efficiency and renewables. The Program Director works closely with the Executive Director (ED), other staff, and Network members to provide strategic leadership, analytical underpinning, and backbone support to the Network. EAN’s work facilitates large-scale change by fostering collaboration among diverse groups in a rapidly evolving energy landscape. As such, the role of Program Director requires the ability to work with and across multiple interests and members to foster learning, collaboration, and innovation that advances our collective mission. It requires continually tracking progress toward goals, coordinating the efforts of organizational leaders with busy schedules, and an understanding of the energy needs, policies, and technologies that are driving change in Vermont and elsewhere. Specifically, the Program Director will have lead responsibility for program development and implementation including ongoing energy tracking and analysis and development and management of the Vermont Community Energy Dashboard. The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) is a non-partisan American public policy and grantmaking institution dedicated to promoting better understanding and cooperation between North America and Europe on transatlantic and global issues. GMF’s Urban and Regional Policy Program (URP) engages leading US and European policymakers and practitioners by facilitating the exchange of transatlantic solutions for building sustainable, inclusive, and globally-competitive cities. URP works in selected cities in the United States and Europe that share a set of common challenges and desire to explore solutions through transatlantic exchange. URP actively stewards transatlantic initiatives that explore key issues through high-impact gatherings, peer exchanges, and applied research. The Urban program focuses its work on two inter-related themes that are critical to a transatlantic urban agenda: Sustainable & Livable Cities (SLC) and Innovative & Inclusive Cities (IIC).

The Program is seeking a Program Assistant to complete key administrative and operational tasks, conduct research on urban and regional policy issues in the US and Europe, and support the development of interactive peer-to-peer learning programs and materials to disseminate innovative practice to the program’s network. The position will be based in Washington, DC.

Key Areas of Responsibility:
1) Assisting the Operations Officer with the day-to-day administration of the program, including: managing the contact database, maintaining program calendars, managing network communications (newsletter, social media, website updates), and preparing budgets and expense reports;

2) Assisting the URP team in the preparation and execution of events, including regular workshops andstudy tours, including managing travel, logistics, as well as, supporting content development;

3) Providing research and editorial support for the URP team, GMF’s urban-related publications, and blog;

4) Supporting fundraising activities, including developing and editing proposal narratives and budgets, researching prospective funders and drafting grant reports; and

5) Based on demonstrated job performance, assisting Program Officers with more in-depth research and project management tasks for key projects.

Major requirements include: Bachelor degree in urban policy, urban planning, public policy or another related field; A demonstrable interest or background in urban policy, specifically in one or more of the following areas: urban development, sustainability, renewable energy, economic policy, economic development, economic inclusion, and entrepreneurship and innovation; Prior work or internship experience (approximately six months to two years) in a think tank, public sector, or non-profit setting. Excellent writing and editing skills in English; written and spoken proficiency in at least one European language is highly desirable but not required. This newly created position will oversee CSE’s Renewable Energy department including, highly visible distributed generation (DG) projects and programs such as the California Solar Initiative for the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) and the SunShot RoofTop Solar Challenge for the Department of Energy (DOE). These projects and programs cover a vast geographic area from the service territory of San Diego Gas & Electric for CSI, multiple programs in south and central California to the entire state of California for the RoofTop Solar Challenge.
Under the general direction of the Director of Programs, the Senior Manager is responsible for planning, organizing, coordinating, and directing the work of staff implementing renewable energy projects and programs.  The Senior Manager will assign and review work, ensure that significant deadlines are met, oversee staff’s analysis, evaluate work performance, provide or recommend training for staff development, and recommend or select personnel.  The Senior Manager will lead the business development effort for the Renewable Energy department and serve as CSE’s subject matter expert and team lead in the energy industry. 
Daily activities will involve managing development of work products required for project administration, facilitating team meetings involving complex issues, interacting with CSE policy and marketing staff, preparing briefing or other materials for presentation, and making presentations in representation of CSE’s programs and mission. This position requires interaction with stakeholders including legislative staff, industry, customers and government agency staff including those at the CPUC and California Energy Commission as well as the DOE.  The Senior Manager will be responsible for providing timely and useful analysis and advice to Commissioners’ offices, administrative law judges, and CSE management on a wide range of regulatory issues pertaining to, DG and related proceedings.  Frequent travel may be required.
Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Project management, team leadership, and/or supervisory experience, including being responsible for the preparation of professional work products by a team of individuals.
  • Substantial first-hand experience in the DG marketplace, preferably in the private sector, e.g. with a manufacturer, installer, or integrator.
  • Familiarity with DG policy and implementation issues, including interconnection, energy procurement by utilities and customers, and/or integrated resource planning.
  • Ability to consistently meet deadlines and coordinate complex and expansive workload.
  • Planning, organizing, coordinating, and directing the work of others.  Ability to inspire others to work intelligently and foster cooperative relationships among team members.  Ability to motivate others.
  • Ability to synthesize complex information and/or data into a written work product.
  • Experience working collaboratively with other stakeholders, and/or with staff from other agencies (such as renewable energy providers or the CEC)
  • Effective communication skills are critical and required.
  • Attention to detail and follow-up is essential to the success of this role
  • Must be able to maintain a good working relationship with all co-workers, stakeholders and clients.
  • Skill in establishing goals and objectives and developing comprehensive plans.
  • Public speaking and presentation experience
  • Oversee the work of subcontractors.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • A track record of successfully managing multiple parallel short-term projects while communicating project status and expectations both in and out of the organization.
  • Familiarity with financial analysis and electric & gas utility rate structures.
  • A minimum of seven to ten years of proven experience in energy project development.
  • Policy research, analysis and development.  Experience with analyzing complex regulatory issues.
  • Facilitation of stakeholder meetings or workshops. Ability to work cooperatively with decision makers, market participants, interested parties, and other agencies.
  • Ability to work under strict deadlines.  Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Education and/or Experience:
  1. Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Energy Management, Energy Policy, Environmental Sciences, or related field.  Masters Degree preferred.
  2. Eight to ten years of project management experience, preferably energy project management; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  3. A minimum of seven to ten years’ experience specifically relating to energy management or energy systems through consulting, project or construction management, or other relevant experience.
  4. A proven track record demonstrating the ability to work in a fast paced, forward moving environment with the ability to quickly learn new technology.
  5. Outstanding communication skills with the proven ability to utilize these skills across groups within and outside the organization.
  6. Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or equivalent.
Computer and/or Technical Skills:
Demonstrated high-level of abilities of various computer software programs and fluency in using standard office software packages such as MS Office: Access, Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook. 
License, Certificates or Registrations:
Valid California Drivers License; insurable in the State of California.  Must own a licensed and registered vehicle and be willing to use it for work-related purposes.
