District Communications Coordinator & Outreach Liaison, Congressman Jesús "Chuy" García

 Job Description: District Communications Coordinator & Outreach Liaison 

The District Communications Coordinator and Outreach Liaison is essential to the overall communications efforts of the congressional office. This position is responsible for effectively maximizing communication about the Congressman’s accomplishments, priorities, and events to constituents, stakeholders, and local press throughout the District. This position requires excellence in communications, digital platforms activity, as well as community engagement. This position will also carry out duties to implement the district outreach strategy, community relations, and constituent services. This position reports to the District Director and works closely with the Communications Team and Outreach Manager for communications and outreach, respectively. 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

Excellent writing and editing skills in English and Spanish; 

Strong knowledge of organizations, institutions, and leaders in the 4th congressional district.

Knowledge of 4th congressional district history and issues; and citywide issues. 

Knowledge of local and citywide reporters, bloggers, and media outlets. 

Ability to plan and edit visual material to support communications, including photos, video and graphics;

Understand and implement best practices and most effective use of different communications and social media platforms; 

Understand how to use communications as a tool for community organizing and outreach among a wide variety of district stakeholders; 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Act as a liaison to stakeholders, coalitions, constituents, and federal government agencies to develop and maintain effective relations; 

Provide input to communications calendar and implement District based communications projects; 

Work with the Communications Director to develop and maintain relationships with Chicago-based reporters, bloggers, communicators. Be able to schedule and staff interviews for member; 

Develop and maintain District communications contact list, including radio, TV, neighborhood news, bloggers, local news outlets. Coordinate with the DC Communications team; 

Develop a list of social media “influencers” in the district to follow and to invite as amplifiers of the member’s work; 

Work with District and DC staff to send targeted emails about Congressman’s work to groups of influencers and stakeholders in the district; 

Work in coordination with Outreach Manager to identify key constituent stories to highlight and share with DC Communications team; 

Help District Director plan events that have excellent visual and social media elements

Follow events and leaders in the District to regularly generate local and “personal touch” stories to highlight via Member communications; 

Coordinate local press engagement opportunities and events like press conferences, gaggles, etc.;

Assist with planning and communications for major district events like town halls; 

Assist with planning and communications for rapid response projects; 

Assist with other communications, outreach and event projects as assigned; 

Work collaboratively with Outreach Manager and team to implement district-wide outreach plan based on assigned outreach areas 

Inform the District Director and Outreach Manager of timely and relevant updates of outreach areas; follow areas at the federal, state, and local levels. 

Meet regularly with stakeholders to gather insight and recommendations on policy impact; relay to District Director and Outreach Manager;

Prepare periodic reports for communications, outreach, and casework efforts as established by respective teams 

Coordinate district events such as roundtables, townhalls, meetings, tours, corridor walks, etc. as needed with team; 

Maintain up-to-date files and status on all cases and outreach efforts; 

Work collaboratively with Constituency Services Manager on assigned casework based on respective areas;

Meet attendance requirements as established by the office; 

Maintain a good working relationship with the Member, staff, and constituents; 

Perform other duties as assigned 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: 

At least two years of community organizing, campaign, advocacy, communications or government experience. A post-secondary degree is preferred. Spanish-language fluency or proficiency is preferred. 

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED: 

Ability to perform essential job functions above; 

Ability to speak and write in proficient Spanish and English 

Strong oral and written communication skills; 

Strong leadership and organizational skills; 

Thoroughness and careful attention to detail; 

Knowledge and proficiency of office computer applications;

Knowledge of all issues and events in the district in which the Member is involved; and 

Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment in fulfillment of outreach efforts 

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

Accepts performance-based feedback and directions; 

Works well under pressure and handles stress; 

Communications and outreach duties require work during regular office hours and some nights and weekends. Additionally, employee must be able to drive or travel in-district 50% time. 

Employee must be able to work in a moderately noisy and crowded work environment without an expectation of privacy.

Communications Coordinator - Bubbly Dynamics

Who: Bubbly Dynamics, LLC is a social enterprise with environmentally responsible goals. Since 2002, we have been efficiently renovating buildings, transforming them from vacant and derelict eyesores to job centers and community assets. Bubbly is the owner/operator and design team behind The Plant (1400 W. 46th St.) and the Chicago Sustainable Manufacturing Center (1048 W. 37th St.). What: The Communications Coordinator will support the development and advancement of Bubbly Dynamics’ communications efforts and assist with general administrative/operational functions. S/he will report to Bubbly’s Director of Enterprise Operations, who manages business operations for Bubbly’s two buildings and related projects. This position will be based at The Plant.

Business Administrative Associate, Academic Computing and Communications Center - UIC

Who: The Academic Computing and Communications Center is an agile organization, with a collaborative and team centered environment that provides IT leadership, academic technology infrastructure and services at University of Illinois at Chicago.

What: Business Administrative Associate (CIO, Chief of Staff). This position will help identify, track, and follow-up with constituents on requests and projects as needed. Help identify communications and documentation gaps and work with stakeholders to remediate. Work with the CIO and track regular and scheduled to-do items and projects. Identify necessary staff communications. Organize staff and coordinate campus events and meetings, including agenda items, presentation materials, content, and logistics. Prepare materials for meetings for the CIO. Take ownership of issues brought to the CIO and work with ACCC directors and others to follow-up on and track those issues or projects. Campaign Organizer – Active Transportation Alliance

Who: Active Transportation Alliance, Chicago.

What: Active Transportation Alliance is seeking an individual with political campaign or community organizing experience to join our fight for healthy, sustainable and equitable communities. The ideal candidate will have organizing experience in Chicago’s low-income communities and communities of color.
The Campaign Organizer will lead outreach for the 2018 statewide election and the 2019 municipal election cycles. The organizer will gather input on issue platforms and built support among a diverse group of civic and community-based organizations. The individual will connect with elected officials, candidates, and voters to educate leaders about sustainable transportation issues and raise the profile of our issues in local races. Community Partnership Manager, Chicago Food Policy Action Council

Who: The Chicago Food Policy Action Council’s (CFPAC) mission is to facilitate the development and adoption of responsible policies to improve access for Chicago residents to culturally appropriate, nutritionally sound, and affordable food grown through environmentally sustainable practices.

What: The CFPAC Community Partnership Manager will support CFPAC’s priorities by working in coordination with CFPAC Board and staff members, local communities, organizations, vendors, suppliers, processors and producers as well as staff at City of Chicago Departments and Agencies, and national partners. The Community Partnership Manager will serve as a key coordinative and facilitative resource to members and participants in CFPAC’s existing and emerging networks. The position will provide primary coordination with an emerging Black- Brown group of food system community leaders. The Samuel Tak Lee MIT Real Estate Entrepreneurship Lab (STL Lab) in the MIT Department of Urban Studies and Planning (DUSP) seeks a communications coordinator to join its staff. The successful candidate will lead the STL Lab’s social media and website development efforts and work as part of a team in a fast-paced environment to promote the STL Lab’s mission internationally, with a particular focus on China.

Working under the supervision of the director and assistant director, responsibilities will include:
  • Managing STL Lab’s bilingual website including updating content and managing database and email listserv, and coordinating with internal resources and third party vendor/website developers to expand the website as new lab programs are initiated
  • Developing and executing the STL Lab’s social media strategy using WeChat, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook
  • Producing high quality articles in Chinese on a regular basis through STL Lab’s WeChat account; coordinating with STL graduate fellows, visitors, and researchers on the production of social media content; and preparing, selecting, editing, and proofreading communication materials in support of the lab’s mission
  • Designing and distributing graphic materials (such as posters, monthly or quarterly newsletter) in both English and Chinese for the lab’s publications and outreach efforts
  • Coordinating with both internal and external resources to produce information and material for marketing purposes
  • Translating materials between English and Chinese

Required Qualifications:
  • At least three years of experience working in communications, marketing, or related fields
  • Excellent writing skills in both English and Chinese
  • Experience working with Drupal website development platform and strong IT software skills, etc.
  • Familiarity with website, database, and email listserv management
  • Excellent graphic skills including proficiency in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and/or other graphics programs
  • Strong project management, planning, multitasking and organizational skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to set priorities and meet deadlines
  • Initiative and capacity for working independently and collaboratively within a team
  • Effective oral and written communication skills

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with topics related to real estate development, China’s urbanization, online education, and MOOCs
  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in computer science, communications, marketing, architecture, urban planning, real estate development, or related field
