Campaign Organizer - Active Transportation Alliance

Who: Based in Chicago, the Active Transportation Alliance is a non-profit advocacy organization that works to improve conditions for bicycling, walking and transit and engage people in healthy and active ways to get around.

What: The Campaign Organizer will lead outreach for the 2018 statewide election and the 2019 municipal election cycles. The organizer will gather input on issue platforms and built support among a diverse group of civic and community-based organizations. The individual will connect with elected officials, candidates, and voters to educate leaders about sustainable transportation issues and raise the profile of our issues in local races. Mission: Blackstone Bicycle Works (BBW) is a youth education program of the Experimental Station (ES). BBW is a full-service community bike shop dedicated to promoting positive ecological practices and empowering youth from Chicago’s South Side—teaching mechanical skills, job skills, and business literacy to youth ages 8-18.

Status: $14.50 per hour. Comes with benefits.
Work Hours: Full-Time position; Tuesday-Saturday (may vary and include evenings)
Immediate Supervisor: Program Manager, Blackstone Bicycle Works

Position Objective:
Under the direction of the Program Manager, the youth services coordinator and head instructor
coordinates the daily youth experience. This includes: coordinating and leading bike instruction;
acting as the head instructor for the program; engaging youth in all areas of the program and
business; maintaining the shop as a safe and supportive environment; informing and advancing short
and long term program goals; strongly representing and advocating for the organization and program.

Essential Functions:

● Provide coordination for the youth program.

○ Help to maintain a safe and positive learning environment at BBW.
○ Coordinate, schedule, and lead daily youth bike repair instruction; engage with all
areas of the program and business; further develop and refine curriculum and
instruction methods; work with other staff to develop instruction on customer service
and business operations.
○ Facilitate youths’ participation (intake, retention, parental communication) and their
engagement with all areas of the program and business.
○ Facilitate tracking of program data and other documentation (participation rosters,
youth work logs, skill sheets, apron system, activity summaries, photo/video documentation).
○ Coordinate auxiliary youth services (internship and externship programs, homework
and tutoring, college advising, field trips, races, career exploration, mentoring, snack and meal programs).
○ Schedule and coordinate all instructors (staff, volunteers, and youth). Engage and
develop team to support youth instruction.
○ Coordinate with staff to engage youth in customer services and business operations. Instruct youth on best practices for ensuring quality customer service and shop services.
○ Maintain program spaces, equipment and supplies used for youth education and
engagement. Engage youth in this maintenance.
○ Support and engage with Youth Leadership Team, the program's youth council.
○ Provide reports to monitor student participation, skill advancement, and overall
engagement in program.
○ Support and contribute to program initiatives to address needs and opportunities that
arise, especially those that involve engaging youth.
○ Communicate program needs related to acquiring supplies and equipment. Be an excellent steward of our resources.
○ Assist PM as needed with the management of BBW.

Qualifications:

● Education: High School graduate or equivalent. College degree preferred.

● Experience: Minimum of 1 year of demonstrated success teaching and developing curriculum
for youth programs. Experience leading youth or adult bike repair instruction. Program and staff/volunteer coordination experience preferred.

● Skills and Abilities: Highly organized. Moderate to advanced bike repair skills. Teaching and
curriculum development skills. Able to communicate and relate with a diversity of youth,
adults, staff, and groups; work as part of a team; work independently; take initiative and solve
problems; remain calm under pressure; repair and refurbish bicycles; organize and execute
plans; and effectively use email, google apps, and social media.

● Physical and Mental Demands: Must be physically and mentally able to perform essential
functions, possessing sufficient physical strength and energies to effectively engage in
activities with youth, and manage and maintain the program's supplies, equipment, and facilities.

In partnership with the Executive Director, the Development Director spearheads development efforts for the continual growth and sustainability of the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition (LACBC). Beyond the important role of supporting fundraising efforts and resource development, the Development Director is relied upon within the organization as a non-profit sector guru, with strategic planning and facilitation skills that help to resolve problems and move the mission forward. This position oversees a robust department spanning LACBC's membership, sponsor, business partner and event needs. In addition, they will work with internal staff and external consultants as the lead on events, fundraising, grant writing to private foundations and government funding sources, government contract opportunities for programs and fund-generating LACBC events. They are the lead staff person for the board Fundraising Committee, along with Executive Director and Board Members. They will serve on the organizations Director's Team and help to strategically guide the organization's success. They must represent the organization with a high level of professionalism, organization, and friendliness. The Development Director supervises the Membership Manager and Bike Valet Coordinator. They will serve on the Directors management team. The Development Director reports to the Executive Director.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Advanced degree in marketing, business administration, advertising or equivalent work experience (2-5 years) in the field development preferred
  • Excellent editing, written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in meeting facilitation
  • Knowledge of bicycle & pedestrian advocacy a plus

Key Responsibilities:
The Development Director is primarily responsible for developing and executing LACBC's fundraising strategies. The Development Director is responsible for creating, tracking, and maintaining institutional knowledge on grants and fundraising events for the organization.

Grants & Contracts

  • Coordinate and track all grant application and reporting activities, in collaboration with other staff/departments seeking or working on grant-funded programs and contracted work.
  • Prepare and lead writing for grant applications and foundation proposals and reports.
  • Manage research, writing, and submission of government, foundation, and corporate grants.
  • Manage research, writing, and submission of government, foundation, and corporate contracts.
  • Manage administrative aspects of fundraising efforts.

Events
  • Coordinate and support events and outreach opportunities throughout LACBC's calendar year.
  • Work closely with the Membership Manager, Volunteer and Education Coordinator and Policy Outreach Coordinators in addition to consultants, other organizations, board members, etc. who are organizing and participating in rides and events.
  • Oversee all events on LACBC calendar to ensure revenue generation and responsible allocation of resources.
Communication
  • Effectively communicate the essential needs required to successfully produce events.
  • Utilize professional and kind customer service and interpersonal skills to interact with consultants, staff, sponsors, etc.
  • Possess excellent written communication and editing skills.
  • Communicate with individuals, foundations and corporations to cultivate a more robust network of donors.
  • Serve as chair of the Fundraising Committee, which includes setting meeting times and agendas, facilitating meetings, and as needed, assigning responsibilities and deadlines related to fundraising efforts.
  • Act as staff liaison and project oversight for Board and special events, and if it applies, hired outside consultants, such as Firefly Ball.
Computer Skills
  • Utilize computers to communicate, plan, budget and organize their rides.
  • Limited design and marketing support for LACBC programs and events.
  • Leverage technology to understand our fundraising trends and needs.

Organization, Time Management, and Supervision

  • Ensure that all of their direct reports stay within their allocated hours per pay period and leverage resources to ensure that all work gets done within the allocated hours.
  • Work with Executive Director (and Bookkeeper) to track and manage grant accounts, expenses, fundraising revenues, and construct annual budget.
  • Develop fundraising and PR materials, as needed.
Problem-Solving Skills
Innovative thinking and problem solving skills are required.
Must be able to quickly assess complex problems and come up with solutions.

LACBC Organizational Team Work
  • Respond quickly to emails, attend regular staff meetings, and keep regular records.
  • Attend board meetings, staff retreats and conferences as requested.
  • Respond to requests from your supervisor for special projects, as needed.
  • Participate in fundraising efforts for the organization and to sustain this position.
  • Work as a team player to fulfill the missions and goals of the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition.

Rail to Trails Conservancy (RTC), a national nonprofit trails, walking and bicycling advocacy organization, is actively recruiting for a GIS Specialist.

Job Duties:Manage RTC’s GIS resources, including the master file geodatabase and SDE feature classes used for TrailLink, ensuring appropriate data use and standardizing data-entry requirements and data quality; digitizing and maintaining spatial data for RTC’s trails database; developing and maintaining spatial data, applications, templates in RTC’s ArcGIS Online account; implement outreach strategies for new spatial data collection; and to identify and fulfill the strategies and goals related to the TrailLink platform; producing interactive cartographic products; and assist with locating, editing, or digitizing data for research projects.

Job Requirements/Qualifications:A Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Urban Planning, Computer Science or a related field, with very strong experience in GIS theory and practice. 3 years job experience with daily use of ESRI products may substitute for a degree. Experience with spatial analysis; Proficiency with ESRI’s ArcGIS platform and extensions including ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Online and ArcSDE; experience with the Google Maps API and web development concepts is helpful, but not required; experience creating custom programs in .Net, Python, or JavaScript to manipulate geospatial data; excellent communication and interpersonal skills required.

Responsibilities

The Executive Director (ED) is responsible for implementing the strategic plan of the organization (sfbike.org/about) and reporting progress to the Board of Directors at its monthly meetings. The ED will work with staff, board members, community partners, government agencies, and an active membership to update our five-year strategic plan in 2016. The ED manages, develops, and empowers a staff of 20 people to conduct effective bicycle advocacy. The ED is responsible for managing a $2 million budget and fundraising through cultivating individual donor and business partner relationships. The ED must connect and engage with our diverse members, and work to expand our membership base to better reflect all San Francisco bike riders, including underserved groups and communities. The ED is the primary public face of the organization, speaking to media, government agencies, and at public functions. Weekend and evening work will be required to attend board meetings, fundraising events, member programs, etc.

Ideal Experience and Capabilities

  • At least five years experience managing people, including a demonstrated ability to hire, develop, and manage talented and committed staff.
  • Success leading advocacy work in the area of sustainability, transportation, urban planning, land use, social justice, public health or a related field. Experience with bicycle advocacy is a plus.
  • A strong history of effective fundraising.
  • A deep commitment to the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition's mission.
  • Experience working in a membership organization.
  • Expertise facilitating participatory decision-making in an advocacy organization whose members hold diverse views.
  • Skilled at building coalitions.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize organizational efforts given input from a broad range of stakeholders and multiple competing interests.
  • Ability to communicate effectively to a variety of audiences and to maintain composure in challenging situations.
  • Strong experience representing organizations with the media and with the public at large.
  • An understanding of San Francisco politics, and the ability to work effectively in San Francisco's political environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
