Job descriptionThe Riders Alliance is a membership organization of subway and bus riders working toward a more just and inclusive New York City by fighting for reliable, affordable public transit for all New Yorkers. We organize subway and bus riders to build grassroots power across racial, economic and geographic lines: holding our elected officials accountable, engaging the public, and taking direct action to guarantee that riders have a powerful voice in the decisions that affect us.

The Community Organizer will be in charge of creating, developing and managing community organizing campaigns for better transit service. 

The Community Organizer reports to the Deputy Director and is responsible for:

• Identifying promising transit campaigns in targeted communities;
• Working with community members and leaders to determine goals and strategy;
• Building membership and grass-roots community leadership for the organization;
• Developing leaders among community members through one-on-ones, coaching, and training;
• Working with media outlets and reporters in order to earn coverage of campaign events;
• Building and maintaining relationships with elected officials, city and state agency staff, and other constituencies to win improvements in service; and
• Supervising interns and volunteers as required.

Required Qualifications:

• Strong understanding of community organizing, including managing campaigns, developing leadership, and recruiting members.
• Ability to lead locally-relevant issue-based campaigns in low-income communities, communities of color, immigrant communities, and middle-class communities.
• Excellent people skills: ability to quickly build relationships, to listen to and persuade people, and to engage people effectively around a common goal.
• Strong communication skills, including public speaking and writing.
• One year of experience in a community organizing or a political/governmental role, or equivalent educational experience.
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
• Self-motivated individual able to work independently under strategic supervision from the Deputy Director and Campaign Manager.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Ability to fluently speak language(s) other than English.
• Familiarity with communities throughout New York City, especially in the Bronx.

Experience with and a passion for reform movements is required. A track record of influencing others to action and the ability to galvanize support for CHANGE Illinois initiatives is sought. Ability to successfully sustain and build a coalition and act as a consensus builder is required. The ideal candidate will have a track record of successfully securing funds from individuals, foundations, and other revenue sources. An undergraduate degree is required.

We're hiring Part-time Outreach Representatives!

The Riders Alliance is seeking responsible and outgoing people to conduct community outreach in Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan, with specific campaigns in Flushing, Jamaica, and Woodhaven, and Bed-Stuy. This position is perfect for students or individuals with flexible schedules looking to engage different communities in New York City on important campaigns for bus and subway improvements.

The outreach representative will work with our canvassing director and organizers to coordinate canvassing operations. You will be briefed about the campaigns and trained in community outreach techniques.

Compensation: $12/hr plus a metro card stipend

Associate Researcher, Chapin Hall at the University of Chicago - Chicago, IL

Chapin Hall Center for Children at the University of Chicago is seeking an Associate Researcher to participate in projects focused on capacity building of youth development organizations to improve well-being of children and families systems. This Associate will work on projects in which teams of Chapin Hall research staff of varying levels of expertise work together to complete a range of tasks and dissemination products. The ability to collaborate with other researchers and contribute to the overall deliverables is highly valued. The individual will participate in discussions regarding study design and methods and will develop data collection instruments and protocols. The Associate will also collect and manage data, conduct analyses of quantitative data and will contribute to writing study results. The individual will conduct basic statistical analyses, organize data to inform project materials development, and help partners read, interpret and make use of data.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Contributes to design of research protocols, and submits protocols to the internal review board process.

Collects and manages data: conducts semi-structured interviews and manages survey implementation; responsible for proper handling and preparation of data for analysis.

Completes literature reviews and synthesizes information into user-friendly documents.

Conducts basic statistical analysis on data.

Manages partner relationships.

Coordinates meetings and logistics.

Writes sections of research results and deliverables for clients.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education
A master's degree in social work, public policy, social sciences or other relevant field plus a minimum of two years of relevant, post-degree experience OR a bachelor's degree plus a minimum of five years of relevant, post-degree experience required.

Experience
Minimum of two years research and/or policy experience, including data analysis, in a relevant area required.

Experience with non-profit agencies and/or youth serving organizations strongly preferred.

Project management experience preferred.

Other Qualifications
Strong knowledge of quantitative research methods required.

Strong attention to detail with good organization skills required.

Ability to translate and convey complex concepts and study findings in oral and written communications required.

Demonstrated capacity for working in a collaborative research environment required.

Ability to work independently with a high degree of initiative required.

Problem-solving and critical thinking skills required.

Ability to manage multiple, concurrent tasks required.

Demonstrated judgment and discretion in the handling of sensitive information required.

Able to travel locally and nationally required.

Proficiency using analytic software such as SAS, SPSS, STATA and/or Atlas.ti strongly preferred.
