The Metropolitan Planning Department of Nashville/Davidson County seeks an Urban Designer to join its Design Studio – an in-house studio of planners with expertise in architecture, landscape architecture and urban design. These staff members will provide analysis and recommendations to Metro Nashville on community planning and urban design issues in a wide variety of rural, suburban and urban settings, with an emphasis on sustainable planning.
Qualifications -The ideal candidate
  • demonstrates innovative thinking in planning for sustainable communities on a site, neighborhood, community, and regional scale;
  • demonstrates knowledge of the principles, practices, and trends in architecture and urban design;
  • can conduct studies, analyze findings and provide recommendations for a wide range of urban design issues with an emphasis on architecture and building design;
  • can interpret federal, state, and local regulations and ordinances;
  • possesses strong written, oral and graphic communications skills and is able to communicate with a wide variety of stakeholders in a clear, compelling manner;
  • is familiar with New Urbanism, SmartGrowth, and Form-based Coding principles;
  • can understand and interpret building and site plans; and
  • possesses illustrative graphic skills in hand renderings and/or computer aided techniques.  
Responsibilities –
  • working individually or with a team to ensure that projects are completed in a timely manner, producing high-quality urban design, planning and regulatory products;
  • creating policy and regulatory tools to create sustainable neighborhoods, centers and corridors in rural to urban settings;
  • conducting compliance review for development proposals within form-based codes;
  • critiquing and refining zone change and subdivision request proposals. This includes meeting with applicants prior to submittal of proposals and/or re-designing proposals;
  • providing urban design guidance on the creation of sustainable communities in community plan updates, detailed design plans, and community plan amendments;
  • explaining urban design and sustainable planning principles and practices, working with stakeholders individually and leading public meetings; and
  • effectively communicating urban design concepts and solutions verbally and graphically.
MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Planner I - Bachelor's Degree in architecture or landscape architecture from an accredited college or university and two (2) or more years of planning experience demonstrating use of urban design skillsora Master’s Degree in architecture or landscape architecture from an accredited college or university. Salary: 45,086. Excellent health, dental and retirement benefits.
