The Planning and Neighborhood Vitality Department of the City of Dallas is seeking an experienced professional to serve as a Senior Urban Designer (Sr. Planner) in the Dallas citydesign studio.  The role functions as a project specialist to develop urban design plans, guidelines and policy affecting land use, physical facilities, zoning, and/or transportation issues. 
Key functions:
  • Designs, coordinates and conducts urban design studies for high priority redevelopment areas. 
  • Reviews, prepares and presents design proposals for redevelopment.  
  • Solves complex problems in connection with the urban planning of small and large-scale, urban design and planning projects.                                    
  • Confers with the public, local authorities, city council members, city staff, consultants and the development community regarding design measures and practices.                                                
  • Manages and coordinates projects between various city departments. 
  • Makes presentations to the public and to local authorities regarding urban design plans and redevelopment proposals.
Essential Requirements:
  • Professional Degree in Urban Design, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and/or Planning
  • Seven-plus (7+) years of progressively responsible project experience and project management experience.
  • A strong understanding of urban design principles and theory associated with project design and execution.
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite and AutoCAD. 
  • Ability to communicate with hand sketching and knowledge of GIS, sketch up and other 3D computer modeling preferred.
  • People management and strong team leadership with ability to listen and collaborate effectively with city staff, elected officials, professional organizations, the development community, stakeholders and the public.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with demonstrated experience authoring design guidelines and policy.
  • Collaborative and professional work ethic.
