Home to 116,500 residents, Vallejo is a San Francisco Bay Area city situated in Southern Solano County on San Pablo Bay. It is a centrally-located, culturally diverse, mid-sized city with an urban sensibility and a small-town feel. 
Vallejo is seeking a results-oriented leader to help in the development and implementation of a vision that has been charted for renewal and economic revitalization of the city. The Department of Community and Economic Development has broad responsibilities that include the Planning, Economic Development, and Building Divisions. The purpose of the Department is to efficiently facilitate development review and inspection processes to meet the community’s goals for the development, health and safety, and quality development and increased investment within the community. The Chief Building Official administers the Building Division. The Department of Community & Economic Development will help strengthen and broaden Vallejo’s tax base, partnering with the private sector whenever possible for development and revitalization of commercial, retail and industrial sites in the downtown/waterfront areas and on Mare Island.
The Director will lead and oversee day-to-day management of the Department’s 20 full time employees with an FY 2013-14 operating budget of approximately $3 million. The Director will be expected to play a high profile role in leading the successful update of the City’s General Plan and zoning ordinances that will set the stage for implementation of the City’s adopted Economic Development Plan. The Director will also play a major role in the ongoing development of urban-oriented projects on Mare Island.
The ideal Community & Economic Development Director for Vallejo will be a proven, confident and effective leader of people who will build capacity within the Department and provide superior customer service that is responsive to residents, businesses and developers. At least seven years of increasingly responsible professional experience in the fields of planning, economic development, housing, redevelopment, or community development is required, to include at least four years of administrative or supervisory experience. A certification from the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) is preferred, but not required.
The salary range is currently $131,378 - $159,690 and the appointment may be made anywhere within the range, depending upon the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
