Senior Architectural Historian
GPA Consulting, a California Corporation that specializes in historic preservation planning, is seeking a qualified Senior Architectural Historian with a strong background in preparing Section 106 documentation to join our diverse team of professionals. The successful candidate will be able to prepare all manner of Section 106 reports with little or no supervision. They will also be able to manage others and help them master the Section 106 process. Experience managing federal contracts is strongly preferred. Experience with other aspects of historic preservation, such as CEQA reports, Mills Act applications, HABS/HAER documentation, large-scale surveys, etc., is also desirable. Many of our projects are transportation-related and involve FHWA and Caltrans. Experience working with these agencies is a plus. Ability and willingness to travel is a requirement of the position.

Duties:
Project Management
- Track project budgets and expenditures
- Report to Principal on project schedule and budget
- Prepare major project scopes, budgets, and schedules
- Attend pre-proposal meetings and interviews for prospective projects
- Coordinate and represent GPA in meetings with clients
- Act as project manager and primary contact with clients
- Prepare presentation materials
- Attend and represent GPA at professional conferences
- Direct junior staff members in conducting field surveys and research
Section 106 Documentation (with little to no supervision)
- Independently conduct field surveys of historic buildings (often includes travel outside of the L.A. area)
- Independently conduct research necessary for the evaluations
- Delineate Areas of Potential Effect
- Evaluate properties according to local, state, and national criteria
- Prepare CA state inventory forms
- Read and analyze project plans to determine potential effects
- Apply the Criteria of Adverse Effect
- Work with stakeholders to draft appropriate and agreeable Memoranda of Agreement when necessary
Additional Historic Preservation Services
- Prepare Mills Act applications
- Prepare HABS/HAER reports
- Prepare local, state, and national landmark nominations
- Prepare reports for CEQA compliance
- Conduct large-scale surveys
- Develop historic context statements including registration requirements
- Apply the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties
Requirements:
- Working knowledge of:
- Federal and State historic resource laws and procedures, especially Section 106
- Programmatic Agreements
- HABS/HAER recordation standards
- Historic resource survey methodology and technology
- National Register nomination process
- Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties
- Project management techniques
- Budgeting and scheduling
- Minimum of a Master’s Degree in historic preservation or a closely related field such as historic architecture, urban planning, architectural history, or history
- Five or more years of full-time professional experience in an environment that specializes in historic preservation, public history, or preservation planning
- Strong organizational and computer skills ( Access, Adobe Creative Suite, and GIS a plus)
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills including public speaking, good leadership and project management skills, and must be detail oriented
- Strong writing and analytical skills
- Works well with others in a team environment
- Ability and willingness to travel
