Transportation Senior Routing Specialist, Chicago Public Schools - Chicago, IL

JOB SUMMARY
Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is the third largest school district in the United States, serving over 409,000 students at 482 elementary schools, 122 high schools, and 120 charter or contract schools. CPS employs more than 40,000 people, more than half of whom are teachers.

This position applies advanced knowledge of supply chain operations and logistics principles to manage day-to-day transportation services for CPS students city-wide. Duties include complex and highly diversified analysis, drawing autonomous conclusions to develop and implement best route optimization strategies, new policies and procedures, and managing medium to large size multi-vendors to ensure quality and safety of transportation services for CPS students, including students with special needs and / or disabilities. This position guides and coaches more junior Transportation Specialist staff. The work is under minimal supervision.

JOB PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Analysis, Recommendation and Development of Bus Runs and Routes: 
  • Uses a variety of sources (such as Edulog, Zonar/Edutracker GPS systems, city road closures and construction materials, etc.) and high level of abstract thinking to gather, compile / break down and analyze transportation and student data to develop optimal number of single bus runs and complex routes for the duration of the business day through the metropolitan area of Chicago.

Identifies and Manages Tiering Feasibility: 
  • Determines the operational feasibility of current tiering through comparative analysis of planned data in Edulog, and actual data from GPS reports.
  • Collaborates with Routing Specialists, as well as other cross-functional work groups, to analyze tiering data to identify and implement (drop) optimization opportunities.

Guides Routing Specialists in report compilation to ensure data integrity:
  • Runs statistical data analysis to verify student and transportation data are properly updated in the database and communicated to the appropriate vendor.
  • Reviews vendor KPI’s created by Routing Specialists.

Vendor Management: 
  • Reviews reports run by Transportation Routing Specialists to ensure data accuracy and report timeliness.
  • Generates and analyzes various reports, such as vendor change and vendor summary reports to monitor and evaluate vendor performance levels at assigned schools. 
  • Aggregates, distributes, and manages daily vendor KPI’s.
  • Reviews vendor technology; initiates and recommends changes to vendors’ policies and procedures to implement the most ideal transportation program for customers.
  • Fosters successful business relationships with assigned vendors.

Communicates with various internal and external audiences: 
  • Provides guidance on detailed bus runs information and a changes due to a range of circumstances to various audiences (schools, vendors, parents, and students). Some information conveyed to the audiences is of critical nature.
  • Answers non-routine questions / investigates and resolves complex inquiries / concerns from parents, general public and CPS staff concerning bus routing, scheduling, and school boundaries. Utilizes a relatively high level of judgment and tact when dealing with some conflicting situations. 
  • Fosters successful business relationships with assigned medium to large size vendors.

Performs other duties as they might be assigned.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS AND KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS 
  • Bachelor’s degree in logistics, supply chain management, hospitality, information technology, business or related field.
  • Two (2) to four (4) years of experience in travel, transportation, customer service, and/or hospitality industry, including one (1) to two (2) years of experience with transportation routing/scheduling systems preferred, or a combination of education and related experience. Some supervisory experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Chicago geographic area, city streets, road system, and traffic patterns.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and Power Point).
    • Strong map reading and mathematical skills to make accurate math calculations.
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities to meet deadlines and work well under pressure.
  • Ability to attend to detail and follow tasks through to completion. 
  • Ability to think and work independently with minimal supervision.
