Davidson is a progressive college community of 12,000 in the growing Charlotte region. Winners of the 2004 EPA "Overall Excellence in Smart Growth" award, we have been using traditional neighborhood design principles for a decade. We have an innovative planning ordinance that requires affordable housing, mixed uses, minimum two-story commercial buildings, and open space. It prohibits drive-thrus, parking in front of buildings, buffers, and sprawling neighborhoods.
We are seeking a Planning Director with vision and creativity.  This highly visible position will develop, coordinate, and direct our planning efforts in growth management, connectivity and alternative transportation, comprehensive planning, open space preservation, research and analysis, and urban design.
The Planning Director is responsible for managing a small department staff; advising the Planning Board, Design Review Board, and Board of Commissioners on land-use decisions; and facilitating public meetings and workshops.
The ideal candidate is a leader with excellent oral, written and graphic communication skills; broad experience in planning and design; practical experience in dealing effectively with public officials and the general public; and a record of innovation, creativity, successful plan implementation, and building strong working relationships.
Requires a BA in Planning or related field; MA or equivalent experience preferred. Salary $62,000 - $91,000 DOQ.  Please send cover letter, resume, salary history and three references by November 17, 2014 to: PlanningDirector@townofdavidson.org
