Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture: Tenure-Track Faculty in Urban Design
Position Description
The Carnegie Mellon University School of Architecture seeks candidates at the rank of assistant or associate professor for a tenure-track position in the area of urban design. The School welcomes applications from dynamic educators, innovative researchers, exceptional practitioners, and interdisciplinary collaborators. Faculty members are expected to teach urban design studios across the School’s programs, including the B.Arch and Master of Urban Design programs.
We anticipate that a successful candidate will extend the rich legacy of urbanism in the School of Architecture and will help shape the future of design, research, and practice at the School and in the profession. While we welcome all applications, preference will be given to those with experience in teaching, research and/or practice that explores public participation/community planning processes, theory and practice of urban design, sustainable/equitable urban development, urban/landscape ecology, urban informatics, and urban systems. Carnegie Mellon is expanding its global emphasis, with opportunities to work both locally and globally in places like New York City, Qatar, Rwanda, and Silicon Valley.
School Description
The Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture provides deep immersion in the discipline of architecture, intensified by a university culture of interdisciplinary innovation and creative inquiry. Our undergraduate and graduate degree programs prepare students to be excellent, discipline-defining design-thinkers in diverse global contexts. Since architectural excellence demands both rigorous training in fundamentals and the development of unique specializations, SoArch students extend their core knowledge either through concentration in architecture subdisciplines like sustainable design or computational design, or through interdisciplinary interaction with CMU’s other renowned programs—whether the sciences, the humanities, business, or robotics. Though every School of Architecture student graduates with intensive architecture knowledge, no two graduates leave with the same education.
This world-class architecture education is enhanced by our position within one of the world’s leading research and entrepreneurship institutions; by specialized facilities like the CoDe Lab, dFAB, and the Intelligent Workplace; and by the vibrant, post-industrial city of Pittsburgh.
Qualifications
Applicants must hold as a minimum a first professional architecture degree as well as a post-professional degree in architecture or urban design, or commensurate professional practice. In addition, architectural registration or recognized certification as a planner is required, or evidence supplied of such requirement being met prior to the first reappointment.
Application Process
To apply, access and complete the online application form at www.cmu.edu/architecture/faculty-search, and submit the following materials:
  • A letter of interest that indicates your specific areas of expertise, a discussion of the specific courses that you are prepared to teach (CMU faculty typically teach two courses per semester), and your longer-term plans for research, scholarship, artistic and/or practice activities;

  • A complete curriculum vitae;
  • Contact information for three references, including name, position, employer, email address, and phone number ;
  • A brief portfolio that may include research, creative work, and professional accomplishments, as well as, for those with prior teaching experience, examples of students’ work .

Applications are due Monday, 12 January 2015. Interviews with shortlisted applicants will be scheduled for February/March. Job offers will be made in April and hires completed by May 2015, with employment expected to begin in August 2015.
