Coordinating Planner

The Coordinating Planner will be responsible for implementing complex planning projects, supporting the Chicago Neighborhoods Now initiative, and managing regional and neighborhood planning studies. Working as part of a highly professional team, the Coordinating Planner will initiate and facilitate planning and development activities to promote and implement the City’s economic development, design, land use, and sustainability goals. Working in close coordination with the Department’s three Bureaus, other City departments, and sister governmental agencies, the Coordinating Planner will serve as a departmental point person to lead internal efforts to advance priority projects.
While coordinating the management of multiple projects, the Coordinating Planner will apprise senior management of results by synthesizing data to create detailed reports and presentations materials. Other responsibilities include: 1) representing the City in meetings with business and community groups, 2) managing consultants conducting land use planning and economic feasibility studies, and 3) monitoring the implementation of public and private development projects.

DUTIES

Designs and oversees the conduct of large scale implementation plans, planning studies and
surveys impacting on social and economic development issues

Establishes project assignments, work objectives and timelines and monitors their implementation

Participates in and oversees the collection and analysis of social and economic development data

Evaluates project tasks and implementation strategies for feasibility and compliance with City
development goals and prepares planning programs and position papers to advice senior
management

Coordinates planning efforts between Department bureaus, City departments, community
organizations, sister governmental agencies and developers for the purpose of implementing
project work plans

Represents the department at public hearings and meetings to discuss proposed planning and
redevelopment projects

Develops and maintains relationships with private consultants and developers regarding the
implementation of planning programs and projects

Manages planning initiatives from original study design through the implementation of the plan’s
recommendations

Requests data for proposed projects within Chicago Neighborhoods Now areas from liaisons
within City departments and sister agencies

Generates periodic progress reports on projects underway in Chicago Neighborhoods Now areas,
highlighting opportunities and issues for management attention
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master’s degree in Urban Planning, Transportation Planning, Environmental Planning or a directly related field supplemented by five years of progressively responsible experience in the development and management of major planning or research studies, including two years in a supervisory capacity.
Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:

Related work experience in Chicago

Experience using GIS mapping tool

Experience researching trends, data, and policy in the field of Urban Planning
