Assistant Professor of Economic Geography/Regional Science
The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Department of Geography and Earth Sciences seeks a tenure-track, assistant professor in economic geography/regional science for an August 2015 appointment. This position is in support of a multi departmental cluster hiring initiative by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in the areas of Human and Social Capital, Innovation, & Quality of Life. At the time of appointment, the successful candidate will hold a doctoral degree in geography, regional science, urban planning, applied economics or related field. Qualified candidates will have primary expertise in applied and empirical industrial/ commercial/retail location analysis, geographies of consumption, or an area related to the economic geography of intra-regional locational analysis. Desirable experience includes one or more of the following: (a) expertise in housing policy, (b) the geography and policy of entrepreneurship and innovation, and (c) social network analysis. Also desired is experience in teaching in a diverse classroom setting. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain a robust and sustainable externally funded research program and contribute doctoral level courses in applied economic geography in the Ph.D. in Geography and Urban Regional Analysis, M.A. in Geography and the interdisciplinary Public Policy Ph.D. programs as well as appropriate undergraduate courses as needed. The successful applicant is expected to be actively engaged in the academic community of Department of Geography and Earth Sciences and the Public Policy Ph.D. program via participation and leadership through advising and mentoring students, service at the program, College, University, community and professional levels, and programmatic governance.
The position’s tenure home is in the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences (GES) though 50 percent of the candidate’s teaching load will support the Public Policy Ph.D. (PPOL) program. The successful candidate will play a major role in PPOL including teaching applied/empirical, policy-relevant economic geography, advising/supporting students, and participating in Ph.D. qualifying exams. Within Geography, the candidate will add depth to its locational analysis concentration in the MA program and the Ph.D. in Geography and Urban Regional Analysis. GES and PPOL are committed to rigorous, high-level research and teaching and are deeply involved with other interdisciplinary graduate programs on campus including the Ph.D. in Infrastructure and Environmental Systems (INES), the Master’s in Urban Design (MUD) and the Master’s in Real Estate. The successful candidate will strengthen bridges across the Department and Public Policy Program in curricular and research collaborations.
The Department of Geography and Earth Science is an interdisciplinary community of social and physical scientists with over 30 faculty members and more than 100 graduate students representing geography, planning, GIScience, earth and environmental sciences, geology, hydrology and meteorology. The Pubic Policy Ph.D. Program has 30 core faculty members specializing in Economic Policy, Environmental Policy, Health Policy, Justice Policy, Social Policy, and Urban Regional Development. UNC Charlotte is a rapidly growing doctoral-intensive urban university located in the state’s largest metropolitan area.
