Applicants with prior teaching experience at the college or university level are preferred.
Principal duties:
Teach URPL 590, Planning and Public Health
Duties include developing a syllabus, preparing and grading exams and assignments, and holding office hours.
Additional Information:
The built environment influences public health in many ways. It affects where we live, how we get around, the quality of our air and water, and our ability to access healthy foods be physically active. Evidence-based strategies to protect and improve public health can be integrated into land use and transportation decision-making, from local to regional scales and across urban-rural gradients. New approaches to comprehensive planning, urban design, and land use/transportation policy-making are needed to coordinate efforts across the health and planning sector. The syllabus for this course can be tailored to the interests and expertise of the selected instructor. Potential topics include (but are not limited to): place-specific health impacts (e.g., breathing disorders, gastrointestinal illnesses, heat stroke, obesity, anxiety and stress), urban infrastructure systems (e.g., transportation, parks and open spaces, buildings), and local, state, or federal plans and policies (e.g., transportation, land use, environment).
Resources for teaching this course include the CDC's Healthy Community Design Initiative (http://www.cdc.gov/healthyplaces/) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Active Living Research initiative (http://www.activelivingresearch.org/).
This course's audience will be graduate students in Urban and Regional Planning, Public Health, Public Affairs, Landscape Architecture, and related areas.
There is a possibility this position can be extended in subsequent semesters to teach one or more of course(s) listed on this PVL, or similar courses within the department. This position may become renewable if there is a need for an ongoing appointment.
