Public Lands Transportation Fellowship - The Western Transportation Institute

Who: The Western Transportation Institute at Montana State University-Bozeman. The Public Lands Transportation Fellows (PLTF) program, previously known as the scholars program, began in 2012 and was modeled after the very successful Transportation Scholars program managed by the National Park Foundation (NPF) that served the National Park Service (NPS).

What: The PLTF program provides fellowships to outstanding masters and doctoral graduates in a transportation-related field. The fellows are provided with a unique opportunity for career development and public service working directly with staff of Federal Land Management Agencies (FLMAs) on key visitor transportation issues. Fellows are assigned to work with staff at a unit or region/field office facing a transportation issue to facilitate a transportation planning or implementation project. The assigned projects help the land units develop transportation solutions that preserve valuable resources and enhance the visitor experience.
The program has four goals, which are to:
  • Encourage emerging transportation professionals to pursue their career serving federal lands. 
  • Provide much-needed transportation expertise to FLMA units and regions to help them address critical transportation issues. 
  • Support the development, implementation and evaluation of viable alternative transportation for visitors to FLMAs. 
  • Encourage multi-agency alternative transportation programs that serve visitors to multiple FLMA units. 

Transportation Air Quality Planner I & II - Dallas-Fort Worth MPO (2 positions)

Who: The North Central Texas Council of Governments - Transportation Department - Air Quality Planning and Operations

What: The North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) Transportation Department is seeking an entry- or mid-level Air Quality Planner to assist with the creation and implementation of innovative emissions reduction strategies to improve air quality in the North Central Texas Region. A successful candidate should have an interest in environmental impacts of transportation as well as alternative fuels. Specific projects include, but are not limited to, the Dallas-Fort Worth Clean Cities Coalition and Electric Vehicles North Texas initiatives. Typical initiatives include a wide range of vehicle and technology programs, research and demonstration projects, and regional air quality policies. Work is collaborative in nature, working not only within the NCTCOG team, but also with external stakeholders, including fleets, citizen groups, and associations.

• Identify project staff for project pursuits, including all disciplines/roles necessary for the project. Coordinate with the appropriate departments.
• Assure that Quality Assurance/Quality Control is being performed on every project in accordance with TYLI Corporate, Line of Business, Central Region, and project specific policies.
• Serve as technical resource to project, department, and office staff. Address technical questions/issues.
• Review, or oversee review, of work performed by the department including technical and project management tasks. Coordinate with other departments and/or senior staff to assist in reviews, as needed.
• Develop project and department staffing projections on a monthly basis, at a minimum. Make assignments to department staff. Monitor workloads and assignments to maintain utilization rates of staff.
• Perform and/or assist in client negotiations regarding project scopes of work, fees, and contract terms.
• Monitor project budgets and schedules. Prepare financial forecasts for projects in accordance with company policy.
• Coordinate with Project Accountant on project set-up, monitoring, progress reports, re-budgeting, supplements, subconsultant agreements, insurance requirements, accounts receivable, and invoicing.
• Assist with identification, interviewing, and hiring of planning personnel.
• Coach/mentor/train planning staff. Develop staff for advancing in their careers. Identify opportunities and make appropriate recommendations for advanced project roles of deserving staff.
• Perform or assign annual employee reviews. Coordinate with other departments for input on planning staff. Make recommendations for promotions and salary increases.
• Identify and recommend resource needs (hardware/software, library materials, etc.), as well as training opportunities.

Qualifications: A Master’s degree in Urban Planning is preferred with 15 or more year’s municipal transportation and environmental planning experience. Must have a broad knowledge base in urban planning with a transportation focus, including GIS and comprehensive transportation and land use planning, and specific knowledge in complete streets, bicycle and pedestrian planning. AICP certification required. Experienced in traffic impact studies, parking studies, and transportation projects that include public transportation and non-motorized transportation elements. Strong writing abilities and verbal communication skills, organizational skills, and time management skills are required.

SUMC is looking for volunteers to serve as Summer P2P Specialists. Summer P2P Specialists support our informational and promotional booths throughout the summer and early fall at street festivals and community events. The purpose of the promotional booth is to increase participation in a Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Carsharing Pilot Program, a two-year, grant-funded pilot project to explore P2P carsharing in the Chicago metropolitan area. P2P carsharing is a type of car rental service through which car owners rent their vehicles to other people for an hourly rate. This pilot is a partnership between SUMC, the Center for Neighborhood Technology (CNT) and Getaround. Duties/Responsibilities:

Promote SUMC's P2P Carsharing Pilot Program by talking about the program with festival attendees
Assist with keeping the booth organized and tidy
Help load or unload materials into or out of booth as needed

Time Commitment:
  • One-hour training session
  • Volunteer shift between two and five hours, usually during an evening or weekend
  • Volunteers may choose to work multiple shifts throughout the summer
Qualifications:
  • Willing and able to initiate conversations with event patrons
  • Able to spend at least three hours standing and sitting outdoors in close proximity to others

Position Overview:
The Project Associate will work closely with the Project Manager to implement a peer-to-peer carsharing pilot project. Peer-to-peer carsharing is a process by which car owners rent their vehicles to other people by the hour or the day.

As a start-up pilot project, this person will be responsible for a wide range of duties related to communications, outreach, and marketing activities. We are anticipating a creative and flexible, but also fast-paced atmosphere. The successful candidate must be a self-starter and an independent worker.

In particular, s/he must be well organized, outgoing, and have excellent communication, outreach, and customer service skills. We anticipate that this person will interact with a wide range of people including car owners and renters, community groups, and local businesses.

Project Associate Duties:
  • Conduct web based and grassroots outreach to communities, car owners, and driver participants. 
  • Assist with marketing and communications activities.

The Austin Transportation Department (ATD) seeks a talented Project Coordinator / Pedestrian Coordinator to lead policy implementation, project development, planning efforts and programs related to active transportation, with a focus on pedestrian initiatives. This position will support performance measures related to implementation of the Imagine Austin Comprehensive Plan, the Community Health Improvement Plan, the Bicycle Master Plan and the Urban Trails Master Plan. This position will help to manage grant funding dedicated to bicycle and pedestrian projects as well as represent Austin on national collaboratives such as the Federal Highway Administration’s Pedestrian Focus State and City initiative and provide staff support to the Pedestrian Advisory Council (PAC). The position will also respond to customer service requests regarding pedestrian and bicycle-related issues. The ideal candidate is passionate about active transportation, has an in-depth understanding of best practices in urban design and transportation, is comfortable with flexibility, and is able to work in a fast-paced working environment. This position requires managing multiple projects simultaneously, and the ability to shift from one project to another without sacrificing quality. 

A strong knowledge of transportation policies, events, agencies and projects will be necessary for this position. This position requires frequent and ongoing communication with multiple ATD divisions, other City Departments as well as agencies, organizations and individuals outside the City of Austin. Attendance at public meetings is required, generally 3-4 nights per month. Must have the ability to read, write and fluently speak English. Job Description
Join the dynamic staff at the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO). NACTO, a non-profit association that represents large cities on transportation issues of local and national importance, seeks a Program Associate with a degree in the field of city planning, sustainable transportation, architecture, urban design, or public policy. The Program Associate will liaise with a network of visionary transportation practitioners and leaders on pressing issues in the field, such as Vision Zero, bicycle infrastructure, public transit, technological advances such as e-hailing and self-driving vehicles, and local transportation policy. The Program Associate will also play a major role in developing and coordinating the leading national transportation conference, Designing Cities.

The desired candidate is self-motivated with an interest in working directly with city staff around the country on issues of sustainable transportation and major trends in urban planning, design, and policy. Excellent communication skills are a must, and the ideal candidate will have an eye for detail and the ability to manage multiple projects concurrently. Prior experience with major event planning is preferred. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced, productive workplace.

Responsibilities will include:


  • Facilitate NACTO network of city transportation officials
  • Support working groups on issues such as Cities for Cycling, Vision Zero, green infrastructure, transportation technology, and more
  • Conduct regular and ongoing outreach to city transportation staff
  • Interview city staff about successful, game-changing, sustainable transportation projects and write case studies about cities implementing the Urban Bikeway Design Guide and Urban Street Design Guide
  • Conduct research and interviews to contribute content to forthcoming street design guidance
  • Major role in planning, developing, and executing the Designing Cities conference in Seattle, 2016 – NACTO’s annual conference, which attracts an audience of 650+ transportation leaders and practitioners from over 100 cities
  • Assist NACTO’s Director of Policy & Special Projects with conference program development, identifying leading projects and topics from NACTO cities 
  • Lead on speaker outreach and coordination, communicating with 100+ speakers, facilitating panel planning calls, and ensuring speakers are prepared
  • Lead on attendee engagement, publicizing information and answering questions from conference participants
  • Coordinate conference logistics before, during, and after the event, in partnership with a local event manager in Seattle
  • Assist on-site in Seattle during the conference (September 26-29, 2016)
  • Lead the development of NACTO’s public facing communications and outreach
  • Write the monthly NACTO Newsletter with organizational news and member city project profiles; manage the organization’s social media
  • Write press releases and website content; manage public facing communications; collect and post news and information regularly
  • Manage a photo library of city transportation project photos
  • Help to organize press events, workshops, and trainings in NACTO cities across the country (some travel may be involved)
Qualifications
• Graduate Degree (preferred) or Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Urban Studies, Public Policy, Urban Design, Transportation Systems, Architecture or Civil Engineering with a demonstrated interest in sustainable transportation.
• Relevant internship and work experience in sustainable transportation, urban development, and related fields.

     Davidson is a progressive college community of 12,000 in the growing Charlotte region. Winners of the 2004 EPA "Overall Excellence in Smart Growth" award, we have been using traditional neighborhood design principles for a decade. We have an innovative planning ordinance that requires affordable housing, mixed uses, minimum two-story commercial buildings, and open space. It prohibits drive-thrus, parking in front of buildings, buffers, and sprawling neighborhoods.
     We are seeking a Planning Director with vision and creativity.  This highly visible position will develop, coordinate, and direct our planning efforts in growth management, connectivity and alternative transportation, comprehensive planning, open space preservation, research and analysis, and urban design.  
     The Planning Director is responsible for managing a small department staff; advising the Planning Board, Design Review Board, and Board of Commissioners on land-use decisions; and facilitating public meetings and workshops.  
     The ideal candidate is a leader with excellent oral, written and graphic communication skills; broad experience in planning and design; practical experience in dealing effectively with public officials and the general public; and a record of innovation, creativity, successful plan implementation, and building strong working relationships.
