Job Description
As part of its planning consulting services, GCR seeks a qualified professional to work on a range of community development, specific area and comprehensive planning, market analysis, economic development and revitalization projects. General Responsibilities:
  • Manage projects from start to finish including budget adherence, schedule adherence, managing staff time, invoicing, and client communication.

Intern, Economic Development, City of Evanston - Evanston, IL

The position of Economic Development Intern is responsible for performing entry-level professional assignments to provide staff support to the City of Evanston’s Economic Development Division.

The position provides a great opportunity for an undergraduate or graduate student to learn various aspects and phases of economic development projects which includes providing support in project and field research, supporting staff at various business meetings, performing demanding clerical duties and providing overall office support coordination. The position provides excellent customer service to internal and external customers on a daily basis. The nature of work is characterized by performance of advanced technical and administrative duties for which skill in comprehensive integration and coordination of several dissimilar administrative functions is required.

Work is often project oriented involving full scope of activities and accountability from planning, initiation, execution and coordination to implementation and evaluation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Specific assignment will include some or all of the following):

Economic Development focus:

• Assist in research for economic development projects and initiatives;

• Provide support in field research of vacant commercial properties throughout Evanston;

• Provide data gathering assistance using internal software and public databases;

• Assist in the planning, coordination and hosting of Economic Development events and initiatives;

• Perform general office work which includes but not limited to greeting guests, directing customers to appropriate location or person, answering phones, making copies, filing documents, taking notes at meetings, transcribing minutes etc.;

• Provide support to Economic Development staff at meetings (business districts meetings, internal meetings, meetings with prospective businesses etc.); and

• Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:

• Recent graduate (within 12 months) or enrolled in a Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree Program in Community/Urban Planning or similar degree;

• Must be able to work a minimum of four (4) days out of the work week;

• The following knowledge, skills and abilities:

o Satisfactory verbal and written communication skills;

o Ability to provide excellent customer service;

o Knowledge of business terminology, spelling and punctuation;

o Strong interpersonal and conceptual skills and the ability to deal effectively in a team environment;

o Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse group of individuals including supervisors, co-workers, and the public;

o Skilled in performing basic mathematical calculations;

o Proficient in use of personal computers and related software applications specifically; Microsoft Office, Word, Excel and Outlook; and procedures, statutes, rules, regulations, memos, letters, reports, and legal documents.

o Ability to multi-task many variable duties and responsibilities;

o Skilled in handling frequent interruptions and exercise critical judgment;

o Ability to maintain professionalism in various situations; and

o Ability to read, understand and interpret manuals, ordinances, written policies


SUPERVISION:

Work is performed under general supervision of Economic Development Coordinators.

The position has regular contact with other divisions and department at all levels, and uses the necessary resources in other departments and divisions as well as external resources as appropriate.

PUBLIC CONTACT:

The employee has regular and frequent contact with other City employees (within the department and across department lines), elected officials and general public.

The School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA) at Indiana University-Bloomington seeks applications from accomplished professionals from the academic and practitioner ranks, for one or more anticipated tenure-track and/or non-tenure-track positions in the general field of public budgeting and finance, broadly defined to include: budgeting, financial management, public debt and capital markets, government treasury operations, capital budgeting, and public pension policy and management.

For appointment at the assistant, associate or full professor (tenure-track) rank, an active record of scholarship in budgeting and financial management is the primary qualification. The successful applicant should present evidence of high quality research and an ambitious research program, an interest in applied work, and a strong commitment to teaching. The Ph.D. or an equivalent terminal degree in a related field (e.g., public administration, public affairs, economics, political science, public policy, finance or accounting) is required. Professional certifications (e.g., CPA, CMA, CFA, CPFM) are desirable. Other desirable qualifications include comparative and/or international experience or research interests, research or instructional capabilities in nonprofit finance, and professional experience in government or public affairs.

For appointment of senior public executives at the lecturer or senior lecturer (non-tenure track) rank, the ability to teach complex budgeting, accounting and financial management concepts and techniques at the graduate and undergraduate levels is essential. Minimum educational qualifications for practitioners include the Master's degree or an equivalent terminal degree in a related field (e.g., public administration, public affairs, business administration, accounting, political science, public policy), and 10+ years of public sector experience. Professional certifications (e.g., CPA, CMA, CFA, CPFM) are highly desirable.
