DESIGN EXCELLENCE INTEGRATION
$76,775 - $96,435 per annum

The Senior Advisor guides and coordinates the successful integration of the design excellence mandate, with a focus on the development and implementation of a common regional wayfinding vision for public transit through design excellence principles.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Develops, evaluates, enhances and recommends a harmonized and consistent passenger navigation framework for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) regional transit system that reinforces a seamless passenger journey as part of the Transit Wayfinding Harmonization initiative
  • Coordinates the development, preparation, revision and interpretation of physical and digital wayfinding design excellence standards; coordinates the harmonization of wayfinding standards through a common navigation framework and utilization of the Regional Transit Traveler Information System (RTTIS)
  • Project manages initiatives to implement and pilot harmonized physical and digital wayfinding standards for capital projects
  • Coordinates the procurement of research and consulting services from individuals, corporations and/or academic institutions related to design excellence and wayfinding, including defining scopes of work elements, estimating budget, delineating selection criteria, and overseeing selection process
  • Develops reports of research findings by gathering data to define complex business problems, determining business needs, identifying wayfinding solutions for implementation, and presenting compelling research findings to a variety of user groups 
  • Advises and provides subject matter expertise to consultants, staff, and senior management to advance decision-making associated with harmonized wayfinding elements of capital infrastructure projects; promotes appreciation by internal and external stakeholders of design excellence that contributes to a seamless passenger journey
  • Organizes and facilitates collaborative groups, including a Steering Committee with representatives from the nine municipal transit service providers, to define complex business problems and develop recommendations of wayfinding solutions for implementation
  • Responds to internal client requests related to the advancement of design excellence objectives
  • Participates in the Design Review process to increase corporate accountability, including a Design Review Panel composed of internal staff with design backgrounds, and a range of external design professionals
  • Adopts best practice design principles to achieve corporate recognition for design excellence
  • Embeds design excellence into corporate culture by contributing to the development and delivery of training and education programs
  • Manages budgets associated with external consultants for design and planning services
  • Collaborates with Senior Manager, Design Excellence to develop a plan for long-term staff capacity

Qualifications:             
  • Completion of a degree in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or Planning or a combination of education, training and experience deemed equivalent. 
  • Minimum six (6) years’ professional experience including a minimum three (3) years’ experience in design, project management, innovation, or business process improvement in relevant fields
  • Ability to understand, explain, and implement innovative transportation operations and customer experience solutions
  • Experience with vendor management to manage development and delivery of externally provided products and services and monitor contractor work assignments for adherence to timelines and performance objectives outlined in the Agreement terms and conditions
  • Project management principles and practices, particularly for projects related to innovation and/or technology, including budget and schedule controls, to lead and direct cross functional teams and consultants engaged in simultaneous projects in a complex corporate setting and monitor project activities for adherence to timelines, budgets, and project performance objectives
  • Organizational and prioritization skills to determine priorities and meet strict deadlines in a fast-paced, politically sensitive environment
  • Knowledge of budget development and management processes
  • Oral/written/presentation/public speaking skills to inspire and motivate others and provide reports, briefings and presentations
  • Proficiency in MS Office; Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite is an asset
  • Knowledge of contract law, the Ontario Building Code (OBC), Environmental Assessment Act, the Occupational Health & Safety Act, and accessibility standards an asset
  • Familiarity with the strategic challenges of working within a Design Build Finance Maintain procurement model is an asset
