Public Policy Lectureship, University of Chicago - Chicago, IL

Public Policy Lectureship Available for Spring, 2015
The Public Policy major in the College of the University of Chicago is seeking candidates to teach a course in the Spring quarter of 2015. The course, Problems of Policy Implementation, is a core class within the Public Policy major. Public Policy is an interdisciplinary social science major in the undergraduate College; in recent years, about 70 students have graduated with Public Policy majors annually.
Problems of Policy Implementation analyzes the challenges in carrying out policies in ways consistent with the intentions of the policymakers. The course explores how obstacles emerge because of problems of hierarchy, competing goals, and cultures of different groups. For instance, targeted populations could respond in ways that might undermine – or promote – the policy goals. The class examines how these problems may be overcome – by groups, by policy makers, and by those responsible for implementing programs.
Problems of Policy Implementation is a large lecture course, with more than 100 students enrolled last year. The course instructor will supervise a number of teaching assistants, with the precise number to be determined by course enrollment. Course goals and content will be coordinated with the Director of Public Policy Studies. The position involves all of the usual activities associated with teaching a course: syllabus preparation; assignment development, student evaluation, teaching assistant supervision, conducting office hours, etc.
The successful candidate will hold a PhD in sociology, political science, public policy, or a related field. Evidence of outstanding teaching is desirable. The salary is $7000. The Spring quarter begins in late March, 2015.
