Michael Baker Jr. Inc., an engineering unit of Michael Baker International LLC seeks a Planning Manager to join our growing planning group in our Oakland, CA office.  Within Michael Baker International, the well-established legacy firms of RBF ConsultingMichael Baker Jr., Inc. and other firms are integrated into a full-service professional services consulting firm. Over the past 70 years, the firm has provided planning, land development, engineering, design and construction services to both public and private sector clients.  Our Oakland office provides services throughout the Bay Area and the larger northern California market, as well  as provides planning support services nationwide.
Our community planning team has developed a national reputation for quality planning, effective public engagement and trend-setting ideas.  Services include comprehensive/general plans, subarea/specific plans, active transportation planning, urban design, development ordinances, economic development strategy, strategic planning, corridor studies, health and wellness planning, public engagement and hazard mitigation planning.  We are looking for an energetic, talented and technically experienced planning manager to be an integral member of our growing Oakland planning team.
The Planning Manager will:
  • Execute and lead hands-on production efforts on a wide range of planning projects
  • Provide direct support to our Planning team
  • Directly interact with clients, stakeholders and the general public
  • Mentor junior staff
  • Support marketing and business development efforts
The successful candidate will be one who:
  • Possesses a wide breadth of urban planning experience in many or all of the types of projects listed above
  • Looks to constantly expand their technical and professional knowledge and experience
  • Manages time well in a fun/high-energy multi-project environment
  • Functions in multiple hands-on roles while working on projects
  • Excels in a team environment while also exercising independent initiative and judgment
  • Demonstrates creativity and a healthy skepticism for conventional wisdom
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in urban planning or a related field
  • Minimum ten (10) years of municipal/local government planning-related experience that demonstrate a successive increase in experience and responsibilities
  • Successful history of leading, growing and mentoring planning professionals.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Aptitude for public speaking and client interaction
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and assignments independently under limited supervision
  • Direct experience in preparing and producing planning studies and analysis
  • Experience with Microsoft Office
  • Experience in the preparation of business/strategic plans
  • Experience in proposal development and business development/networking
Preferences:
  • AICP or other related professional certification or licensure
  • Previous consulting experience with municipal/local government clients
  • Understanding of research methods and analysis techniques
  • Intimate knowledge /established relationships with local and regional agencies in the Bay Area or northern CA in general
  • Community and professional leadership
