The Kinder Institute for Urban Research at Rice University is seeking a Senior Editor to undertake a wide variety of duties associated with writing, editing, and publishing Institute documents; grant writing in collaboration with Kinder Institute researchers; and other administrative duties associated with the Institute's publications and events. The Senior Editor may also engage in some policy analysis in support of research and policy projects undertaken by the Institute. The Senior Editor must be knowledgeable about public policy generally and, preferably, urban policy in particular; able to work collaboratively with academics; experienced in translating complicated research results and policy recommendations into understandable reports; and able to oversee design and production of publications. Experience in identifying grant opportunities and grant writing is a plus but not essential. Must be a self-starter capable of working independently and meeting deadlines reliably.
Job Duties:
WRITING/EDITING
- Write and edit Kinder Institute urban policy reports and monographs. This may include basic policy analysis as well as writing and editing. - Write and edit Kinder Institute blogs, Urban Edge newsletter, and other periodicals produced by the Institute. - Oversee proofreading, layout, and publication of Kinder Institute reports and monographs.
GRANT WRITING AND GRANT-SEEKING
- Work with Kinder Institute researchers and affiliated Rice professors in identifying grant opportunities that align with Kinder Institute programmatic priorities. - Write grant proposals under time pressure collaboratively with Kinder Institute researchers and affiliated Rice faculty.
ADMINISTRATIVE AND OTHER DUTIES
- Assist in organizing and executing Kinder Institute events, which may lead to blogs or other Kinder Institute written products. - Work with Events Manager on social media strategy and maintaining website. - Other duties as assigned.
