The mission of Active Transportation Alliance is to make bicycling, walking and public transit so safe, convenient and fun that we will achieve a significant shift from environmentally harmful, sedentary travel to clean, active travel. We advocate for transportation that encourages and promotes safety, physical activity, health, recreation, social interaction, equity, environmental stewardship and resource conservation.
Summary
Active Transportation Alliance (Active Trans) is searching for a talented individual to serve as a Suburban Outreach Manager. Under the general supervision of the Deputy Executive Director, the Suburban Outreach Manager’s primary responsibilities are to advocate for better bicycling, walking and public transportation in northern and western Chicagoland suburban communities (Cook, Lake, DuPage, McHenry and Kane counties). This individual will be responsible for building relationships with key constituents, elected officials, municipal staff and community-based organizations in order to advance Active Trans’ mission and strategic objectives. This is a full-time position based at the Active Transportation Alliance office in Chicago’s River North community, with frequent travel and meetings in the suburbs.
Essential Duties and Accountabilities
General Advocacy and Policy Advancement
- Promote organizational advocacy and campaign goals at the grassroots and grasstops levels.
- Coordinate and collaborate with partner agencies and organizations on issue alignment and strategy.
- Garner community support and enthusiasm for issues and policies.
- Promote policy adoption among local and regional governments and school districts.
- Work with in-house transportation planning department to promote consultant planning services.
- Act as a liaison to communities on planning contracts.
- Raise organizational awareness of Active Trans and promote membership.
- Produce local events to promote Active Trans’ work.
- Represent Active Trans’ interests on various committees and task forces.
- Participate in Active Trans obligatory organizational events and activities.
- Frequent travel within region.
- Evening and weekend meeting participation.
- Participate in Basic Traffic Cycling instruction (according to individual ability to do so).

Mandatory Job Qualifications
Qualifying Experience:• A passion for the transformational nature of walking, biking and transit on community livability, equity and sustainability.
• A commitment to Active Transportation Alliance mission, vision and goals.
• Solid knowledge of the north and west suburban communities.
• Relationships with key officials and organizations in the region.
• Experience in community organizing, public service or non-profit work.
• Superior communications skills, including written, presentational and public relations.
• High school diploma required.
• A minimum of three years experience working in the region in a related field.
Desired Qualifications
Preferred Experience- A minimum of five years experience working in the region in a related field.
- College degree in a related field.
