On the Potomac River a short distance from Washington, D.C., Alexandria has a rich and diverse architectural and cultural heritage. Once a bustling colonial seaport, history is evident everywhere in Old Town even as Alexandria becomes a regional center for art, recreation, retail, nightlife and culture. The city is experiencing a long-term growth boom as well as new and diverse populations. Future challenges facing the City include redesign of the waterfront to accommodate an influx of new visitors, and redevelopment of metro stations, shopping centers, brownfields and obsolete industrial areas into mixed-use communities with high quality amenities and urban design. In keeping with historic character, the City emphasizes historic preservation and compatibility of land uses, while maintaining a thriving economy.
 
Duties: 
  • Assist the Director with Land Use and Administration issues. 
  • Provide oversight and management of Land Use Services (Zoning, Historic Preservation and Planning Commission staff) and Administration Divisions.
  • Manage the operating budget for the Department, special projects involving policy and/or land use issues.
  • Works with the City Attorney on Land Use issues.
  • Manages Special Use Permits (SUP).
  • Supervises the SUP planners and have primary responsibility for responding to Council and citizen requests.
MINIMUM & ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Master's Degree; at least eight years experience at the division chief or comparable managerial level, either in a supervisory or project management role or both and at least five years in supervisory role; has been the lead on complex projects involving multiple staff, agencies, and interests; considerable experience writing about, analyzing, presenting on planning issues.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Master's Degree; at least 10 years experience, including five years supervisory. High level of expertise in one or more planning-related topics; e.g., design, housing, economic development; membership/participation and/or accreditation in planning a professional organization; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
