The Arts Alliance Illinois has need of *two research interns for the
summer of 2011*. Their primary charge would be to assist with the
completion of a project two other UIC interns have been working on: The
Local Arts Index (LAI).
LAI is a collaboration between Arts Alliance Illinois and a national
service organization, Americans for the Arts, as well as 100 communities
around the U.S. The project objective is to gather data that reflect
indicators of the health and vitality of arts and culture at the
community level. LAI is an effort to utilize indicators and shared
measurement systems to gauge the health of the arts on a regional basis
and to influence public decision-making. This project draws on best
practices from other sectors, but charts a course unique to the arts sector.
Data-gathering methods to be used by interns will include Internet
research, public records analysis, and phone interviews. Interns will
then prepare these data for analysis by Americans for the Arts.
Indicators we will focus on this summer are:
* ethnic groups in the cultural life of the community
* coverage of local arts and culture in print media. and
* exhibition spaces
During the course of the summer the two interns may also be asked to
assist with other research tasks:
* analyses of public funding of the arts by legislative districts
* data-gathering for an economic impact study
* background analysis for public presentations on the health of
the arts sector
