Fairfax County, a diverse, dynamic and growing jurisdiction in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area, is seeking a professional planner and/or transportation/traffic engineer. Work assignments will be focused on the land development process providing exposure to a variety of transportation disciplines including traffic operations, road construction, transit, transportation demand management (TDM), and pedestrian/bicycle that will have application to a diverse and complex land development caseload. Primary assignments will include review and analysis of the transportation characteristics of development proposals and identification and pursuit of measures to address network impacts; lead interactions with staff, the development community, citizens, advisory groups, task forces, and elected officials; and preparation of written reports and public presentations that are related to these assignments. Supervision of professional staff is also anticipated. Fairfax County faces significant transportation challenges and is seeking innovative solutions. This is an opportunity to work on a range of cutting edge land use and transportation initiatives, including design, programming, and engineering.
Position may be underfilled as a Transportation Planner II; the Underfill Requirements are stated below in the Employment Standards section.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, urban, regional or transportation planning, or a closely related field; plus four years of experience related to transportation planning.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check to the satisfaction of the employer.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Strong background in land use and transportation planning. Professional license in engineering or planning. Ideal candidate will have experience in: evaluating transportation network impacts of land use proposals, negotiation skills, coordinating with local, state, and federal government organizations; working with the public and officials on transportation issues; GIS and traffic impact analysis, strong analytical skills, excellent oral and written communications skills, ability to organize and coordinate multiple projects and assignments and establish priorities, and ability to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal direction.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work is generally sedentary. However, employee may be required to do some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of items under 25 pounds in weight.

UNDERFILL REQUIREMENTS:  This position may be underfilled by a less-qualified person at the Transportation Planner II level (Grade S24), which requires any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, urban, regional or transportation planning, or a closely related field; plus two years of experience related to transportation planning.
