Coordinating Planner

Department of Housing and Economic Development
Number of Positions: 1

The Coordinating Planner will be responsible for implementing complex planning projects, supporting the Chicago Neighborhoods Now initiative, and managing regional and neighborhood planning studies. Working as part of a highly professional team, the Coordinating Planner will initiate and facilitate planning and development activities to promote and implement the City's economic development, design, land use, and sustainability goals. Working in close coordination with the Department's three Bureaus, other City departments, and sister governmental agencies, the Coordinating Planner will serve as a departmental point person to lead internal efforts to advance priority projects.

While coordinating the management of multiple projects, the Coordinating Planner will apprise senior management of results by synthesizing data to create detailed reports and presentations materials. Other responsibilities include: 1) representing the City in meetings with business and community groups, 2) managing consultants conducting land use planning and economic feasibility studies, and 3) monitoring the implementation of public and private development projects.

DUTIES:
  • Design and oversee the conduct of large scale implementation plans, planning studies and surveys impacting on social and economic development issues
  • Establish project assignments, work objectives and timelines and monitors their implementation
  • Participate in and oversee the collection and analysis of social and economic development data
  • Evaluate project tasks and implementation strategies for feasibility and compliance with City development goals and prepare planning programs and position papers to advice senior management
  • Coordinate planning efforts between Department bureaus, City departments, community organizations, sister governmental agencies and developers for the purpose of implementing project work plans
  • Represent the department at public hearings and meetings to discuss proposed planning and redevelopment projects
  • Develop and maintain relationships with private consultants and developers regarding the implementation of planning programs and projects
  • Manage planning initiatives from original study design through the implementation of the plan's recommendations
  • Request data for proposed projects within Chicago Neighborhoods Now areas from liaisons within City departments and sister agencies
  • Generate periodic progress reports on projects underway in Chicago Neighborhoods Now areas, highlighting opportunities and issues for management attention

Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's degree in Urban Planning, Transportation Planning, Environmental Planning or a directly related field supplemented by five years of progressively responsible experience in the development and management of major planning or research studies, including two years in a supervisory capacity.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS 
This position requires applicants to complete an interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position will be selected.

Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following: 
  • Experience using GIS mapping tool
  • Experience researching trends, data, and policy in the field of Urban Planning

VETERANS PREFERENCE NOTE : The City of Chicago offers Veterans Preference to both current, active military personnel AND military personnel who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States and have received an honorable or general discharge. Eligible candidates must have at least six months of active duty documented.
