NATURE OF WORK:
Perform professional planning work requiring excellent analytical and communication skills in
planning processes of standard to moderate degrees of difficulty. The City Planner is an entry-level
planning position with CPED. This vacancy is with the Land Use, Design and Preservation section of
CPED and includes implementation of City policies through review of development proposals. The work associated with this position includes frequent deadlines while conducting land use and preservation analysis. The City Planner works independently as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
(Including additional duties as assigned):
• Answer questions and respond to general inquiries about planning issues from the public and other
agencies.
• Prepare or assist in preparing technical, physical, economic, social or statistical data to aid in planning
activities.
• Analyze and make recommendations on all elements of planning using knowledge of architecture,
historic preservation, information systems, land use, transportation, and urban design.
• Assist boards, commissions and committees as required and work with neighborhood and business
groups on planning projects.
• Analyze and make recommendations on zoning and preservation applications for review and action
in public hearings by the Board of Adjustment (BOA), City Planning Commission (CPC), Heritage
Preservation Commission (HPC), and City Council.
• Research, evaluate and communicate proposed changes to the City’s Code of Ordinances.
• Work with architects, developers and other city staff in developing conceptual designs and monitoring
design development reviews.
• Function as a team member on multidisciplinary projects.
• Attend professional seminars and workshops to maintain current knowledge of state and national
trends and developments.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Historic Preservation, Urban, Regional, or Community Planning, Architecture,
Landscape Architecture, Geography, Cultural Resources, or a closely related field.
Experience: Two (2) years of related experience.
Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the
position MAY be considered.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
• Master’s Degree in Urban, Regional, or Community Planning, Historic Preservation, Architecture,
Landscape Architecture, Geography, Cultural Resources, or a highly related field.
• Certification by the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP).
• Experience presenting to citizen boards and commissions.
Good understanding of quantitative and qualitative analysis and demonstrated ability to conduct
•
research, collect and analyze data, and present results clearly and effectively.
• Experience analyzing and processing architectural analysis, historic preservation/landmark permit
applications, and/or land use applications.
• Experience in producing high quality project planning and special studies.
Ability to multi-task and service multiple clients.
•
Experience working with diverse stakeholders on planning and preservation issues and projects.
•
• Ability to work effectively, independently and as part of a team and able to work with a diverse urban
population. Ability for problem solving and visionary thinking.

SELECTION PROCESS:
Eligibility to be considered for the position will be determined by a rating of training and experience or oral
examination (100%). It is very important to fully describe your education and work experience as it relates
