Public Administration Internship (Paid - $15/hr), Village of Northbrook - Chicago (North Suburbs)

POSITION DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: ADMINISTRATIVE INTERN DEPARTMENT: GENERAL GOVERNMENT
FLSA: NON-EXEMPT LOCATION: VILLAGE HALL
EFFECTIVE DATE: 04/17/13
BASIC FUNCTION:
Provides a variety of public administration support and management to the General Government
department and the Village organization. Provides responsive, courteous and efficient service to Village
residents and the general public.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Receives direction from the Assistant Village Manager and/or Assistant to the Village Manager.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Essential Duties.
1. Coordinates projects related to all aspects of municipal government that may include
quantitative and qualitative research, data analysis, report writing, and presentations.
2. Researches and drafts SOPs, resolutions, ordinances and other regulatory documents.
3. Assists the Communications Manager in preparing newsletter items, press releases, social media
items and other written public communication. As needed, prepares public presentation
materials for use by staff.
4. Administers programs as assigned to provide public services and support to residents and
businesses of Northbrook.
5. Assists in the preparation of the annual department budget and Village capital improvement
plan.
6. Responds to and resolves complaints and requests from the public related to Village operations.
7. Gathers information in response to requests from outside agencies, the public (including
Freedom of Information Requests), and Village personnel.8. As required, attends daytime, evening or weekend meetings and provide administrative support
to various staff functions, boards and commissions.
9. Assists with planning and coordination of Village sponsored events such as the 4th of July, Earth
Day, Art Festivals and similar celebrations and events.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities.
Knowledge of municipal management and legislative process.
Knowledge of personal computer operations and related software, including Microsoft Office
applications.
Ability to communicate in a clear, concise, and professional manner, both verbally and in
writing.
Ability to research, analyze, and compile information into comprehensive written reports or
memoranda.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other Village employees,
public officials and the public.
Ability to concentrate and analyze situations and determine logical outcomes and solutions.
Ability to attend to multiple tasks at one time.
Ability to effectively organize work, set priorities, and meet critical deadlines.
Ability to operate independently without close supervision.
Education and Experience.
Must possess a bachelor's degree. Requires entry in a public administration graduate program.
Municipal administration concentration preferred.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Normal conditions associated with a general office environment.
