Executive Director - Advocates for Urban Agriculture

Who: Advocates for Urban Agriculture

What: Advocates for Urban Agriculture (AUA), a 501 c 3 organization, was founded in 2002 and is a coalition of individuals, organizations and businesses working to support and expand sustainable agriculture in the greater Chicago area, from home and community-based growing to market gardens and small farms.AUA’s mission is to empower urban growers to foster thriving communities through sustainable agriculture and equitable food systems.

AUA envisions a flourishing food system that promotes sustainable food growing in the Chicago area as an integral part of community economic development, food security & sovereignty, environmental sustainability, and overall quality of life for the region, and in which practitioners, organizations, and residents can reap the benefits.

AUA‘s Board and staff work in concert with AUA’s 2,300 plus members, partner organizations and businesses and local government in multiple ways. These include education and information sharing about good agricultural and business practices, participation in the development of progressive city and county policies that support urban farming and land access, and support for state legislation pursuant to these goals and values.

Sustainable food growing in the greater Chicago area is deeply rooted, robust and growing. So too is AUA. As Chicago’s hub for urban agriculture, AUA is increasingly recognized by Chicago’s food-system funders and government agencies as an important collective voice and effective partner in forging sound local food policies and related regulations. And now, upon a foundation of more than fifteen years, AUAis preparing the plans to expand its efforts with the goal of helping Chicago build an even more vigorous and sustainable food system.

Community Partnership Manager, Chicago Food Policy Action Council

Who: The Chicago Food Policy Action Council’s (CFPAC) mission is to facilitate the development and adoption of responsible policies to improve access for Chicago residents to culturally appropriate, nutritionally sound, and affordable food grown through environmentally sustainable practices.

What: The CFPAC Community Partnership Manager will support CFPAC’s priorities by working in coordination with CFPAC Board and staff members, local communities, organizations, vendors, suppliers, processors and producers as well as staff at City of Chicago Departments and Agencies, and national partners. The Community Partnership Manager will serve as a key coordinative and facilitative resource to members and participants in CFPAC’s existing and emerging networks. We’ve developed the Learning Garden to connect kids to real food through outdoor learning and experiential play. Learning Gardens are 21st century learning environments that support a diverse array of lesson-plans and activities in science, business, math, and art. Position Description
  • The Kitchen Community is seeking a Project Coordinator to assist with site reviews, site design, construction activities, and maintenance tasks. Reporting to the Regional Project Manager, a primary responsibility is to serve as a liaison with the schools and their garden teams to ensure successful Learning Garden pre-build and Planting Day activities. The Project Coordinator visits sites and works with the schools and garden teams to develop and review effective garden team goals.
  • Primary Responsibilities
  •   Coordinate with TKC Operations Manager and Regional Project Manager in grading, targeting, and selecting recipient schools for Learning Garden grant applications.
  •   Work with Regional Project Manager to assist with Learning Garden site analysis and site selection.
  •   Proactively manage communications with schools regarding Learning Garden pre-build and build information.
  •   Assist with scheduling meetings, updating contact information, and tracking school information.
  •   Promptly respond to emails and inquiries.
  •   Communicate with district facilities personnel, school principal, and school facilities manager regarding garden site, scope, requirements, project timelines, and deliverables as needed.
  •   Meet school garden teams, review plans, and communicate as necessary. Determine team’s weaknesses and strengths. Relay this information to Regional Program Manager.
  •   Assist in developing project tasks and resource requirements, including site design tasks.
  •   Coordinate and execute project plan within scheduled project timelines.
  •   Coordinate with TKC Program team regarding applicants and installed Learning Garden schools.
  •   Coordinate the Installation Day with the Learning Garden Program Manager, school community, and garden team.
  •   Provide on-site garden assistance to Learning Garden Educator(s) and school garden team on Installation Day.
  •   Transition the school relationship to the Garden Educator.
  •   Assist with proper product installation as required and review minor maintenance procedures with schools administration and facility management.
  •   Assist in reviewing, executing, recording, and tracking required warranty repairs.

Required Qualifications
  •   Minimum education of bachelor degree in related field such as landscape architecture, construction management, urban planning, urban agriculture, environmental science, or environmental design.
  •   Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups of people.
  •   Strong oral and written communication skills, including public speaking skills, and capacity to work with team, contractors, and clients.
  •   Ability to work independently, multi-task and coordinate several major activities at once, in a flexible manner.
  •   Proficient computer skills with AutoCAD, Excel, and Word. Adobe Suite knowledge a plus.
  •   Valid driver’s license and reliable personal vehicle (mileage reimbursement provided).

Preferred Qualifications
  •   Three years of construction management and site design experience.
  •   Interested in local food systems, urban agriculture, and/or school gardens.
  •   Knowledgeable about the garden growing season in the region.
  •   Familiarity or previous experience with non-profit organization(s).
  •   Ability to work some evenings and weekends as needed.

Job Description:
The company seeks a dynamic, innovative sustainability director to manage its Eco-Andersonville program, deepen Andersonville's efforts towards building a sustainable, resilient neighborhood, and further develop a culture of sustainability throughout the community.

Duties and Responsibilities
Eco-Andersonville Programs


Community engagement. Work with local block clubs, elected officials and assorted institutions to grow a web of sustainability resources and initiatives. Act as the voice and public persona of Eco-Andersonville programs to build support throughout the community and beyond.

Waste reduction. Oversee and expand the Andersonville Community Composting initiative, working with our provider to increase the number of participating households and businesses through promotion and education. Oversee the Andersonville Streetscape Recycling program, solidifying funding sources and ensuring the program's long-term sustainability.

Energy efficiency. Expand ADC's effectiveness as a resource on energy efficiency, broadening the scope from the commercial to the residential community, and building partnerships to provide education on rebates, suppliers, and best practices.

Placemaking. Oversee the installation and permitting of Andersonville's parklets and bike corrals. Seek out additional opportunities to activate and beautify Andersonville's urban environment.

Green Building Incentive. Manage the Green Building Incentive program of Andersonville SSA #22, connecting local business and property owners to funds for green improvements.

City training. Provide technical assistance on sustainability to other economic development groups throughout the city, as part of ADC's Specialty Advisor contract with the City of Chicago. Provide reports to the city on progress of contract fulfillment.

Fundraising

Provide day-of-event staff support for ADC initiatives including Andersonville City Made Fest and the Andersonville Honors.

Manage innovative and/or grassroots fundraising, as needed, and research grant opportunities for programs.

Administration

Develop and track budgets and work plans for own program areas

Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

At least three years' relevant experience in community sustainability initiatives, with a proven track record of innovation and success.

Experience in one or more of these areas: urban planning and design strategies pertaining to walkability and alternative transportation; composting and urban agriculture practices and policies; state, federal, and corporate energy efficiency and green building incentive programs for households and businesses; broad knowledge of energy efficiency and green building practices, techniques, and materials; growing communitywide energy, waste reduction, and local food systems initiatives.

Experience in community organizing and grassroots sustainability efforts.

Demonstrably excellent skills in program administration and development – especially within a non-profit or community organization

Experience evaluating effectiveness, efficiency and impact of programs.

Budgeting and financial oversight experience

Familiarity with Andersonville a plus

Excellent written and verbal communication. Skill at actively engaging with a variety of constituencies with diplomacy and tact

Public speaking skills a plus.

Demonstrably high level of self-motivation and ability to work effectively in a low-structure environment.

Strong ability to manage several simultaneous projects.

Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access. Experience with GIS, AutoCad, Google Sketchup, Adobe Creative Suite helpful.

Internet and social media fluency.

Bachelor's degree preferred. Advanced degree/certificate helpful.

This individual will possess specialized knowledge in environmental planning, energy, open space, waste and urban agriculture management. The purpose of this position is to plan, organize, and direct the operations of the City’s energy, open space, waste and recycling and urban agriculture programs; to oversee the development and implementation of environmental programs, projects and associated community outreach; to ensure the achievement of the City’s environmental policies and compliance with regulatory requirements; to support planning processes related to parks, open space and the environment; to lead and perform expert level professional work; and to provide competent advice to City policy makers, leadership and the general public on environmental issues.
This position requires a Bachelors degree in Public Administration, Environmental Science, Environmental Planning, Environmental Policy or Management, Natural Resource Management, Biology, Sustainable Design and Building, or a related field and a minimum of five years of related professional experience, including knowledge and experience in environmental management, environmental compliance, energy management, waste minimization/waste reduction, energy efficiency and/or environmental sustainability principles; a minimum of three years administrative, budgetary or financial experience, and five years supervisory experience or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities.
