Coordinating Planner-Transportation Safety****

Under direction, the class functions as a project manager over multiple
planning projects, coordinating and managing the development and
implementation of complex or specialized transportation safety planning
projects and programs of considerable scope and complexity, and may
function as a supervisor directing the work of a group of planning
professionals****
****
Essential Duties:****
·Functions as a senior level planner and technical expert, responsible for
coordinating research studies and preparing plans designed to improve the
level of safety for all users of the city's transportation systems****
·Implements the Child Safety Zone Ordinance, working with city departments
and city officials to develop a plan to enforce the ordinance, including
creating a public awareness program; establishing criteria for the
identification of child safety zones; and developing a plan for
implementing safety zones and installing speed enforcement cameras****
·Develops a prioritization strategy for safety zones and a kit of tools to
incorporate in the zones by working with other CDOT divisions to secure the
required funding and goods and services****
·Conducts research and analysis of traffic data and provides leadership and
direction in the development of a traffic safety plan for the City aimed at
reducing the number of traffic crashes and improving pedestrian safety
through appropriate countermeasures including traffic engineering,
education and enforcement strategies****
·Coordinates with existing multi-modal safety education programs to ensure
implementation of a broad-based traffic safety program to ensure that
safety education is data-driven and focused on identified problem areas****
·Identifies federal, state, local and private funding sources to ensure the
delivery of safety countermeasures and develops grant applications to
secure funding for these measures****
·Directs roadway safety engineering projects and ensures that roadway
safety is integrated into all major capital improvements developed by CDOT
by supervising project scoping, engineering, and construction in
collaboration with CDOT Engineering staff****
·Coordinates with the Chicago Police Department on roadway safety efforts
and ensures that traffic safety enforcements are data-driven to provide
effective traffic safety enforcement to reduce roadway crashes****
·Coordinates with State agencies on funding, roadway safety audits, safety
countermeasure selection, and the development of roadway safety goals to
ensure the effective utilization of federal, state, and local resources****

Qualifications****
****
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's degree
in Urban Planning, Transportation Planning, Environmental Planning or a
directly related field supplemented by five years of progressively
responsible experience in the development and management of major planning
or research studies, including two years in a supervisory capacity****

Selection Requirement: ****
This position requires applicants to complete an interview which will
include a written exercise as part of the interview. The interviewed
candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the
responsibilities of the position, based on the oral and written parts of
the interview will be selected.****

Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:****
Previous experience preparing grant applications****
Previous transportation planning experience****
Previous experience working with GIS applications****
VETERANS PREFERENCE NOTE: The City of Chicago offers Veterans Preference
to both current, active military personnel AND military personnel who have
served in the Armed Forces of the United States and have received an
honorable or general discharge. Eligible candidates must have at least six
months of active duty documented. In order to receive the veterans
preference, candidates need to indicate whether or not they are a veteran
