THE ILLINOIS AFRICAN AMERICAN COALITION FOR PREVENTION YOUTH INITIATIVES COORDINATOR 

POSITION DESCRIPTION
Mission:
Established in 2005, the Illinois African American Coalition for Prevention (ILAACP) is a statewide, membership-based charitable organization that strengthens early intervention and prevention systems, policies, and programs in underserved communities through culturally-relevant research, training, and advocacy.

Job Title: Youth Initiatives Coordinator

Responsible to: The Youth Initiatives Coordinator position is co-managed by the Illinois Violence Prevention Authority (IVPA) and the Illinois African American Coalition for Prevention (ILAACP). As such, the coordinator reports to the ILAACP Youth Initiatives Director and IVPA staff.


Summary: The Youth Initiatives Coordinator (YIC) coordinates the Illinois Violence Prevention Authority's Youth Advisory Board (YAB) and Choose Respect Illinois program. The person in this position must be committed to and have experience in positive youth development, violence prevention and the coordination and oversight of multiple projects.


This is a full-time, exempt position. Some out of town travel and Saturday work may be required.

Specific Responsibilities
YAB:
 Work with IVPA staff and ILAACP Youth Initiatives Director to develop, implement, and monitor YAB program goals and objectives through an annual work plan, operating calendar, and budget.
 Assist ILAACP Youth Initiatives Director with the development of an annual recruitment and retention strategy for YAB members.
 Recruit, train, and support 10-15 YAB members from all IVPA supported youth initiatives. Plan and coordinate four (4) quarterly YAB meetings.
 Work closely with YAB Co-chairs to develop YAB meeting agendas, and identify guest speakers and presenters for YAB trainings.
 Develop content and facilitate bi-monthly YAB webinars, for YAB members and/or YAB adult supporters, which may include identifying webinar training objectives, developing webinar agenda, and utilizing evaluations for continuous program improvement.
 Coordinate YAB Co-chairs active participation in IVPA Board meetings. This includes reviewing meeting agendas with YAB Co-chairs in advance of meeting and making sure they are properly prepared to make presentations when requested.

 Identify and coordinate opportunities for YAB members to conduct workshops, which increase public awareness about Illinois youth-led violence prevention strategy.
 Conduct surveys, from time to time, of YAB members and YAB adult supporters for continuous program improvement.

CRI:

 Work with IVPA staff and ILAACP Youth Initiatives Director to develop, implement, and monitor CRI training and technical assistance plan goals, objectives, and tasks through an annual work plan, operating calendar, and budget.
 Recruit and train CRI Youth Representatives. Identify and coordinate opportunities for CRI Youth Representatives to conduct workshops consistent with the goals and objectives of CRI.
 Develop content and facilitate quarterly CRI webinars for CRI sites, which may include identifying webinar training objectives, developing webinar agenda, and utilizing evaluations for continuous program improvement.
 Work with CRI program evaluators to ensure CRI sites’ active participation in on-going evaluation activities.
 Work with IVPA staff to plan an annual CRI Kick-Off and Mid-Year retreat. This may include developing retreat agenda, planning retreat logistics – e.g, site selection, food, lodging, photographer, etc. – and communicating to CRI sites.
 Assist IVPA staff in disseminating CRI RFP. Review and score CRI proposals.
General Administrative & Clerical Support
 Participate in monthly IVPA YAB CRI meetings which may include developing meeting agenda and transcribing meeting minutes.
 Increase public awareness about YAB and CRI through internal and external marketing and communications opportunities.
 Keep abreast of YAB and CRI program changes and events specifically, and IVPA violence prevention efforts in Illinois, in general.
 Knowledgeably answer inquiries about YAB and CRI as well as ILAACP’s mission, values, and the organization as a whole in a professional manner.
 Remain abreast of best practices in the youth development and violence prevention fields through research, inquiry, and continuous learning.
 Prepare and send formal correspondences.
 Provide telephone coverage, take messages, reduce messages to critical information, and return calls within 24 hours.

Minimal Qualifications:

Education
BA in Public Health, Social Work, or related field with at least 2 years related experience working with youth and/or violence prevention.

Knowledge, Skills, & Experience

 Knowledge of positive youth development and violence prevention programs, policies, systems, research, and best practices.
 Demonstrated experience with community organizing and proven ability to successfully coordinate a statewide network is required.
 Experience developing age appropriate curricula and delivering trainings requiring highly effective public speaking and presentation skills.

 Strong and effective interpersonal, time management and organizational skills required including excellent written and verbal communication skills.
 Ability to effectively multi-task and remain detail oriented in a fast-paced, outcome oriented, and fluid work environment.
 Excellent typing ability and high proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite – i.e., Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Project, and Visio - is required.
 Some special event planning experience is required.
 A valid Illinois driver’s license and some of town travel required. Ability to work some Saturdays and occasional evenings is required.
Work Conditions
 Overtime may be required to meet project deadlines.
 Sitting for extended periods of time.
 Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and other devices and objects.
 Physically able to participate in training sessions, presentations, and meetings.
 Some travel may be required for the purpose of meeting with clients, stakeholders, or off-site personnel/management.
