Duties:
The University of Illinois seeks an Assistant Director of Economic Development. Under minimal administrative supervision, provides support to the Associate Vice President for Innovation and Economic Development, serving as a specialized advisor and performing professional tasks related to the planning and management of VPR initiatives. Assists in directing activities that drive economic development and enhance connections among Illinois-based corporate, government, community and university stakeholders. Additional responsibilities include:
1. Assists in efforts to develop relationships with corporate and community partners and establish connections to campus stakeholders in support of the economic development mission of the University.
2. Assists with the identification, planning and coordination of large-scale collaboration opportunities, e.g., the development and management of public-private partnerships to address strategic research priorities designed to promote economic development.
3. Assists in the development of UI innovation hubs and technology acceleration centers, leveraging university resources to promote community-based economic development opportunities.
4. Analyzes data, including performance metrics, reports, and other available materials, and compiles information with respect to technology transfer and commercialization.
5. Serves as the liaison to campus units involved in entrepreneurship and economic development.
6. Provides coordination and management of high-profile meetings, special events and conferences related to Technology Commercialization and Economic Development, ensuring that such events are organized and conducted to maximize collaborative efforts and results.
7. Utilizes extensive knowledge about the economic development activities in Chicagoland, regionally and nationally to function as liaison to campus and university units in the facilitation of internal and external planning activities on behalf of the Office of the Vice President for Research.
8. Meets regularly with University, community and corporate stakeholders to identify and understand service and coordination issues. Participates in the development of remedial actions to improve operations, collaboration, and economic development relationships.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in business, political science, applied science or related field (MBA, PhD or JD is preferred) and at least two years of demonstrated work experience in functional execution and/or technical analysis of large projects is required. Other requirements include: demonstrated success in planning high-profile events attended by technical and functional audiences; demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills; exceptional oral and written communication skills; outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with diverse, broad-based constituencies; ability to work independently and exercise solid judgment and discretion; excellent teamwork skills and the ability to serve as a team leader; demonstrated organizational and multi-tasking skills to provide accurate, detail-oriented work that is appropriately prioritized to meet stringent deadlines and respond to matters of urgency; proficiency with Microsoft computer programs/applications (e.g., Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook, Explorer). Preferred qualifications include: work experience acquired in a higher education institution, government agency or consulting firm and experience in the development and execution of economic development programs and/or policy.
