Summer 2012 Internship Opportunity
Position: Summer internship for a student in the graduate or undergraduate program in Economics, Public Finance, Urban Economics or related field. The student must be eligible to work in the US.
Department: The position is in the Analytical Services Division (ASD) of Loop Capital Markets. The ASD is a group of six professionals who publish research and analytics for institutional clients. The research covers primarily municipal bonds, yield curve analytics, intermarket relationships (yield ratios of munis versus LIBOR and Treasuries), relative market attractiveness, supply and demand factors, and many other topics. The group has forecasting models; two option models developed in-house, and conducts various research products that require a solid foundation in statistics and econometrics.
The Firm: Loop Capital is one of the fastest growing institutional brokerage firms in the country. The firm is diversified into many fixed income and short-term and equity product lines, although municipal public finance in the largest activity currently. The firm features a very collegial, diverse environment where interns are allowed to learn new skills that will be helpful when they are seeking full-time employment.
Tasks: The intern will assist in collecting and managing data in support of our annual Pension Fund Review—our most popular publication. The intern will also assist the ASD staff in conducting other research studies. These studies include analyzing tax exempt securities, new issue volume, etc. As much as 75% of the summer’s work will be pension related and 25% will be independent research on a project to be agreed upon with the student’s input.
Skills: The intern must have had at least three economics or public administration classes, have an interest in and understanding of finance, and be confident in their ability to work in excel.
Compensation: Loop strives to give interns a quality experience and makes every effort to pay market based rates. Compensation is hourly; work must be done in our offices at 200 W. Jackson. The intern is expected to work 40 hours per week.
