Northwestern Neighborhood & Network Initiative (N3)

The Institute for Policy Research (IPR) at Northwestern University

Hours: 10-25 hours per week, dependent on availability and project needs.

Pay: Commensurate with skills, education, and experience

Note: This posting is for Spring/Summer 2022, with the potential to continue to Fall 2022. The majority of the RA’s time will  be dedicated to conducting fieldwork in person at various intervention sites throughout Chicago. When not in the field, the  RA will work remotely or on-site at N3’s offices, located at 2001 Sheridan Rd in Evanston. All in-person fieldwork must  comply with CDC and Northwestern protocols for COVID safety.

About N3

The Northwestern Neighborhood & Network Initiative (N3) is a new research center at Northwestern University that  seeks to engage communities, civic partners, and policy makers in addressing core problems facing the residents of urban  communities. All of our research focuses on utilizing “network thinking” (an understanding of how relationships shape how  we feel and behave) to improve neighborhoods, the city, and our region. We are currently working with partners in Chicago to  evaluate a series of interventions focused on reducing gun violence and improving public safety in the city. For more  information about N3, visit: https://n3networks.northwestern.edu/

Responsibilities

N3 is looking for a part-time, temporary research assistant (RA) for Spring and Summer 2022, with the possibility to extend  into Fall 2022, to assist on projects related to violence prevention. The RA will perform a variety of important project, data  collection, and analysis activities to support N3, including:

Performing primarily fieldwork, including conducting observations, interviews, and/or focus groups at community  sites throughout Chicago

Performing other qualitative research activities, such as taking ethnographic field notes and coding data

Assisting with the preparation of results for memos, spreadsheets, and presentations targeting funders, policymakers,  and academic audiences

Other administrative tasks or responsibilities as assigned by N3 staff

The ideal candidate is enthusiastic about and available to work in the field during non-business hours (e.g.,  evenings & weekends).

Educational Value

This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on research experience in an innovative, partnership-driven research space. We  aim to bridge traditional academic and community/government boundaries to improve public safety and wellbeing for  residents of Chicago. We can train highly committed individuals in research design, data collection, and analysis, as well as  community-engaged research approaches. Our work is action-oriented and policy-relevant: your efforts will matter not only for  the success of N3, but also the safety of residents living in high crime areas of the city.

Desired Qualifications

We are looking for people who demonstrate some or all of the following characteristics and skills:

A high level of commitment to the work of N3, enthusiasm, flexibility, and a desire to learn

Qualitative Research Assistant, School Year - University of Chicago Poverty Lab

Who: University of Chicago Poverty Lab

What: Concentrated poverty remains an endemic feature of American cities. Residents of low-income communities suffer higher rates of crime victimization and greater exposure to environmental contaminants. Their children experience worse schooling outcomes and limited access to healthy food. Many struggle with irregular employment and unstable housing. The path to social mobility is foreclosed by limited opportunities to gain new skills and limited availability of affordable financial products. While social enterprises work hard to address these challenges with innovative solutions, policymakers and practitioners struggle to make sustained progress due to a lack of evidence about what works.

We launched the University of Chicago Poverty Lab in 2015 to test innovative approaches to addressing the intersecting challenges faced by low-income residents of our cities. We bring the best science and “big data” analysis possible to bear on the problem of policy design, leveraging government administrative data to guide local policy and to generate high-quality evidence about what works. We believe that carrying out this work in very close collaboration with policymakers helps keep us focused on the most important real-world problems and increases the chances that our findings translate into real-world impact.
