Natural Areas Conservancy Development Director, NYC

NATURAL AREAS CONSERVANCY (NAC) DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR BACKGROUND The Natural Areas Conservancy (NAC) is a new organization created to work in partnership with the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation to restore, protect, and manage a network of green and blue space that promotes a healthy, livable, and diverse New York City. The NAC is tasked with expanding and diversifying the protection, management, and restoration of 10,000 acres of forests, wetlands, and grasslands currently overseen by the Parks Department’s Natural Resources Group. This public/private partnership will unify the identity of NYC’s natural areas, increase public awareness and volunteerism, and integrate advanced technology.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
 Create and implement a multi-year development plan for the NAC.
 Strategically target funding sources to raise a $2 million challenge grant by December 2013.
 Develop a strategy to meet a 5 year, $12 million fundraising goal.
 Structure and supervise a multi-year corporate and individual fundraising effort.
 Collaborate with the NYC Parks Department’s volunteer, special events, and programmatic staff to create interest in and support for joint fundraising opportunities.
 Expand the development team with the addition of new staff.
 Manage development staff, motivate staff to meet objectives of the new conservancy and, create goals and objectives for aforementioned staff.
 Hire and supervise development consultants as needed.
 Pursue funding, and develop partnership with other agencies, environmental groups and universities.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
1. A bachelors degree from an accredited college and five years of full-time experience in development, or a related field, at least 3 years of which must have been in an administrative, managerial or executive capacity, or in supervision of professional staff working in one or more of the above mentioned areas;
2. Education and/or experience equivalent to “1” above. However, all candidates must possess the 18 months of administrative, managerial, executive or supervisory experience as described in “1” above.

PREFERRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS
 Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in fundraising or a related field.
 Masters degree in business administration, public administration, public policy, environmental policy, economics, or a related field.
 Experience raising funds for environmental projects.
 Energetic self-starter with experience in developing and managing new initiatives, creating systems and institutionalizing fundraising efforts.
 Strong knowledge of organizational development, Parks agency structure and divisions and/or government operations.
 Excellent management, administrative, supervisory and communication skills.
 Proven track record of goals-based accomplishment and achieving fundraising targets.
 Extensive experience managing a specified budget, executing contracts and developing firm leads.
 Personal knowledge of NYC environmental funding community.
 Proficiency in computer software including, Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and Internet usage.
 Valid New York State driver license.
