The Senior Director will - along with the Vice President and one other staff member - be responsible for project management and the delivery of consulting services for local governments, foundations and non-profit organizations. About the Ochs Center
The Ochs Center is a forty eight year old, Chattanooga-based non profit organization that conducts independent data analysis and policy research. With a full time staff of eight, the Ochs Center works with local governments, foundations and other non-profit organizations to use data and research to solve problems. While most of the Ochs Center's work is in the Chattanooga region, we also work throughout Tennessee, the Southeast and the nation on a wide range of issues including government budgeting and operations, environmental policy and economic development.
The Ochs Center's core product is the State of Chattanooga Region Report. Funded by local foundations and released for the first time in 2006, the State of Chattanooga Region Report offered a comprehensive look at conditions in Hamilton County in the areas of health, public safety, the local economy, education and community development. Using survey data and administrative data from national, state and local government agencies, the report compares conditions in Hamilton County with other benchmark jurisdictions around the country. the State of Chattanooga Region Report also examined differences in thirty-six subregions across Hamilton County from Alton Park to Walden.
In the last five years, the Ochs Center has worked at a national level with the Brookings Institution, the Urban Institute, the Rockefeller Family Fund, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Annie E. Casey Foundation, International City and County Management Association and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The Ochs Center is a member of the Urban Institute's National Neighborhood Indicators Partnership and its President and CEO is a Nonresident Senior Fellow with the Brookings Metropolitan Policy Program.
The Ochs Center is governed by a nineteen member board of directors, including both Chattanooga community leaders and national policy leaders. Its offices are located on the campus of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
About Chattanooga, Tennessee
The Ochs Center is located in downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee. Chattanooga has a population of 170,000 and is the fourth largest city in Tennessee. Surrounded by mountains and on the Tennessee River, Chattanooga is a case study in urban renaissance. After losing more than ten percent of its population in the 1980s, Chattanooga gained population in the 1990s and has seen a near ten percent increase in population this last decade: no other city over 100,000 has sustained such a turnaround.
Over the last twenty five years, a series of initiatives - the Tennessee River Walk, the Tennessee Aquarium, Coolidge Park, the Creative Discovery Museum and $120 million 21st Century Waterfront Plan - have led to a renewed and revitalized waterfront and downtown.
Less than a two hour drive from Atlanta and Nashville, Chattanooga is regularly cited by national publications for its livability, its outdoors and its affordability. In 2008, Volkswagen selected Chattanooga as the site of its first North American production facility in twenty years. Chattanooga is also the home of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee, which recently completed construction of a new $300 million headquarters.
