Job Description

Principal Policy Researcher

The Institute for Children and Poverty (ICP) is an independent nonprofit research organization based in New York City. ICP works to provide timely analysis and recommendations that will enhance public policies and programs affecting poor or homeless children and their families. Specifically, ICP examines the condition of extreme poverty in the U.S., and its effect on educational attainment, employment and income, domestic and family violence, child welfare and foster care, and family homelessness and low-income housing. ICP seeks an experienced researcher to implement a research agenda aimed at documenting the complexity of family homelessness with an emphasis on the impact of homelessness on children. ICP intends to generate a body of literature that will provide timely and insightful information to enhance policy discussions and public dialogue on family homelessness at the federal, state, and local levels. Specifically, the Principal Policy Researcher will lead a small team of skilled staff to explore the relationship between family homelessness and educational attainment, employment and income, domestic and family violence, child welfare and foster care, and low-income housing.

Qualifications and Expectations:

* Ph.D. in social sciences with a minimum of three years experience
* Demonstrated experience with the development and implementation of research projects involving primary and secondary data collection and analysis (knowledge of STATA or SPSS required)
* Demonstrated knowledge and experience in qualitative and quantitative analyses of public policies
* Knowledge of state fiscal issues, including state and local budgetary and entitlement issues affecting children and families living in poverty
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills including the ability to synthesize and communicate complex issues to a variety of audiences
* Ability to establish and/or maintain collaborative relationships with other research and public policy organizations
* Knowledge of the ongoing and emerging efforts of policymakers and lawmakers to address family poverty issues
* Experience directly supervising and mentoring staff
* Some travel may be required

Compensation
