INTERNSHIP: Community Development, Village of Lincolnwood

Community Development Intern

DEPARTMENT: Community Development
REPORTS TO: Development Manager

SUMMARY:

Work is assigned and supervised by the Assistant Village Administrator or Building Manager in the area of administration, finance, economic development, and building and zoning. The position requires research involving a variety of public administration projects. Assignments are expected to be carried out with limited supervision, using sound judgment in selecting work methods.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

• Participates in employee committees, writes memos, prepares presentations, updates department website.

• Perform assignments as directed on building codes and redevelopment initiatives and plan development; and associated funding recommendations and implementation strategies.

• Develop literature on Village services; articles for Village newsletter and update of Village marketing material; prepares presentations.

• Assist in coordinating various meetings, responding to citizen inquiries, answering telephone calls, draft correspondence for the Development Manager.

• Provide research on various other issues and topics.

• Performs research in the field as needed including parking inventory and property evaluation.

• Comply with all Village Policies, Protocols, and Procedures.

• Perform other duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:
Candidates must have a Bachelor's Degree, and currently working toward a Master's Degree from an accredited College or University in Public Administration, Urban Planning/Studies, Community Development or related fields.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret analyze documents, and make appropriate recommendations.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Knowledge and understanding of statistics.

REASONING ABILITIES:
Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
• Understanding of community growth issues.

• Apprised of economic development and planning strategies.

• Working knowledge of computers and computer technology including Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.

• Awareness of local, state and federal programs available for the furtherance of economic development objectives.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with various boards and commissions, community groups, village departments and the business community.
