FELLOWSHIP: United Way Community Research Fellowship

United Way of Metropolitan Chicago
Community Research Fellowship, 2010-2011


United Way of Metropolitan Chicago (UWMC) is seeking applications from qualified graduate students to support the new and ongoing work of the Community Building Division toward our mission of improving lives across the region (visit www.uw-mc.org for more information).

This fellowship offers an advanced graduate student experience in a unique philanthropic setting. By working with UWMC staff the Fellow will gain experience in the activities of community building through:

Social analysis of state-wide policy based surveys determining impact of recent and ongoing State of Illinois budget cuts.

Researching key social and demographic trends within the Chicago metro region, in order to best locate community need in the health and human service sector.

Assisting in analysis of program performance data for funded organizations.

Supporting activities targeting building and valuing diversity across the organization.

The Community Research Fellowship is sponsored by UWMC through the Rothschild Foundation.
Fellowship Appointment and Terms:
• The Fellow will be appointed for the period of September 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011.
• The Fellow will be expected to commit 1000 hours during the fellowship period, with the distribution of hours to be mutually agreed upon.
• The Fellow will receive a stipend of $15,000 from United Way.
Fellowship Qualifications: The Fellowship will be awarded to an advanced graduate student (i.e. coursework complete) with the best overall qualifications, including:

Knowledge
broad understanding of social issues including discrimination, health, community development, family life, and/or human capital development;
strong interest in public policy and advocacy work
academic preparation in sociology, public policy, or related discipline;
Skills
primary and secondary social data research abilities
must be familiar with survey methods, from build to analysis
strong written and oral communication skills, including presentation of data in everyday language
Work environment
ability to do independent work
willingness and capacity to function in professional office environment
Application Process: (a) Submit a resume and cover letter (1 page) outlining qualifications and interests; (b) Submit a brief (no more than 5 pages) writing sample (see below for instructions) to Lorrie Lynn, Director, Community Investment, llynn@uw-mc.org.

Writing Sample Instructions:
Please submit a copy of previously completed work that is focused on an issue that has an impact on individuals and their communities (preferable with a focus on the Chicago metro region). This work can be purely academic, field experience, or a combination.
