Training Program Director, Democracy North Carolina - Durham, NC


Training Program Director Job Description

The Training Director is the primary staff person responsible for developing and overseeing the
implementation of Democracy North Carolina’s political education, training and leadership development strategies. Democracy NC’s training program provides organizing skills and tools to community groups and individuals committed to social justice and develops leaders among grassroots supporters of Democracy North Carolina’s priority issues.


The Training Director reports to the Associate Director. The Associate Director is the operational manager
of the organization, ensuring that the policies and programs are implemented and evaluated.
Responsibilities:
 Work with key Democracy NC staff to develop effective training objectives, strategies and programs.
Help develop and manage the training program budget.
 Evaluate and revise Democracy NC’s core training curriculum annually and develop new training
curriculum as needed. Update and create training materials, including any on-line learning tools.
 Adapt core curriculum and customize training sessions and tools for various constituencies.
 Serve as the lead statewide trainer for Democracy NC and lead or arrange train-the-trainer sessions for
staff co-trainers and volunteer leaders.
 Scout training opportunities statewide and lead recruitment for trainings in areas not covered by a
Democracy NC organizer. Assist staff organizers in recruiting advocates in their regions for training
opportunities appropriate to their interests, skill and commitment level.
 Handle logistics for trainings – location, technology, food, registration, etc.
 Assist with follow-up of training participants, particularly in areas of the state not covered by
Democracy NC organizers, to keep people engaged and develop them as leaders.
 Manage Democracy Summer, Democracy North Carolina’s organizing internship for college students:
o Develop curriculum and handle logistics for Democracy Summer training;
o Work with other staff on student recruitment and hiring;
o Create or seek learning opportunities for the students throughout the program and find
ways to keep students connected and engaged as alumni of the program;
o Evaluate the program annually and improve it as needed
 Build and maintain relationships with other organizations doing organizing, electoral or social justice
trainings in NC and nationally to help reduce duplication and foster collaboration where possible.
Skills and competencies:
 Significant experience in community organizing.
 Experience with program evaluation and curriculum development. Background in or knowledge about
popular and political education theories and tactics.
 Ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse constituencies.
 Knowledge of North Carolina’s history, culture and politics.
 Understanding of and commitment to racial equity.
 Experience working on or knowledge about Democracy North Carolina’s core issues.
 Excellent writing and public speaking skills.
 Proficient technology skills – computer programs including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel,
PowerPoint, Publisher); using AV equipment; using social media.
 Bi-lingual ability, particularly Spanish, is a plus.
