The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) is seeking to hire a Data Systems
Programmer. The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) is the region’s official
comprehensive planning organization. Its GO TO 2040 planning campaign is helping the
region’s seven counties and 284 communities to implement strategies that address transportation,
housing, economic development, open space, the environment, and other quality of life issues.

authoritative source for regional data collection, exchange, dissemination, analysis, evaluation,
forecasting, and modeling. These activities are critical to providing CMAP and its partners with
objective, definitive assessments of current and future regional conditions. Accordingly, CMAP
is committed to maintaining a staff of highly qualified professional technicians, analysts, and
modelers to secure relevant data using state-of-the art analytical tools. In support of GO TO
2040, CMAP developed an online application, www.metropulsechicago.org, for tracking data
indicators at the regional and sub-regional levels. The MetroPulse website’s launch has surfaced
a need for additional online data systems, all of which require ongoing maintenance and
enhancement.
Position Description
This position will be responsible for creating and maintaining online data products, including
interactive web pages, data visualizations, application programming interfaces (APIs), data-drive
applications, GIS maps and similar items. Responsibilities:
Essential Functions
Create and maintain web applications
Create and maintain data visualizations
Create and maintain online GIS maps
Process raw data and ensure data quality
Document code and data in a professional manner
Help to build CMAP’s capacity for maintaining a robust data management program
Manage code using Git or a similar code repository
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
The successful candidate must have basic skills in web programming. Familiarity with applying
data resources in urban planning environments is desired. The following skills are not required
of applicants, but will become important for the Data Systems Programmer position. CMAP will
provide training opportunities as needed to build the successful candidate’s expertise in these
skill areas.
Web development using HTML, Javascript and CSS
Scripting languages such as Python, C# and VB.NET
Relational databases and structured query language (SQL)
Microsoft IIS and ASP.NET
ESRI ArcGis Server
Data visualization tools
Management of large datasets in various formats
Familiarity with urban planning and public policy issues, and the of role of data in urban
planning
Ability to communicate with non-technicians about data and data systems
Education and Experience
Applicants should have at least a bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems or
a related field. A minimum of two years’ relevant experience in web development or a similar
field is required. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience in applying data to
urban planning.
