Program Facilitator: Gilead Initiative, Chicago Public Schools

*Communities In Schools of Chicago Gilead Initiative *

*Program Facilitator Description*

*2012-2013*

*_Overview_*

Communities In Schools of Chicago (CISC) is a non-profit that connects
Chicago Public Schools to community resources in order to address
student needs. Last year we connected more than 71,000 students with
essential services in areas such as health promotion, mental health,
violence prevention and arts enrichment. Around 90 percent of students
at our 170 partner schools are low-income, our services and all
connected programs are provided at no cost to schools or students.

As part of a special initiative, CISC receives funding from the Gilead
Foundation to provide a comprehensive sex education and self-esteem
education program. Now in its seventh year, the curriculum has evolved
into a six-session comprehensive sex education and two-session
self-esteem program. This interactive curriculum aims to address
specific risk behaviors associated with HIV/STI infections.

This year, the CISC-Gilead HIV Prevention Program will be participating
in a program evaluation. The purpose of the evaluation is to test the
implementation process and effectiveness of the program, to provide
formative feedback to program planners to strengthen future program
activities and to understand the impact of the CISC-Gilead HIV
Prevention Program on student participants, and to determine the extent
to which the curriculum is being administered in a common manner across
health educators.

*_Educator Description_*

Trained presenters will go to schools across the city with an identified
need for comprehensive sex education or self-esteem education for their
students. Prior to teaching, interested presenters will go through a
12-hour training covering HIV/AIDS/STI education, curriculum
facilitation and classroom management.

In addition to gaining valuable direct service experience, presenters
will receive a small stipend for their time spent in the classroom.
Presenters are expected to participate in all training events, be
reliable and provide high-quality instruction in schools with fidelity
to the curriculum.
