This Environmental Protection Specialist position is located in the U.S. EPA Air and Radiation Division, located at 77 W. Jackson Boulevard in Chicago, Illinois. EPA's Region 5 Office covers six states: Indiana,
Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin.
Indoor and Voluntary Program Section Function
The Air and Radiation Division has an Indoor and Voluntary Program
Section (IVPS), which is responsible for implementing the indoor
environments, radon, asthma, second hand smoke, Energy Star, radiation,
and environmental education programs. The Section provides information
and outreach on these programs to the public to increase awareness and
reduce exposures to indoor air pollutants through better design,
construction, and operation and maintenance practices; personal choices
and behaviors; and mitigation of indoor air quality (IAQ) problems. IVPS
supports effective environmental risk reduction activities through
voluntary actions by the general public and key stakeholders such as
building and health professionals, state, local and tribal governments
and a wide range of nongovernmental organizations. The section also
provides and manages grants to State, local and Tribal and non-profits
organizations for several of these programs
The Regional environmental education program, also located in IVPS, is
responsible for implementing the National Environmental Education Act
which requires EPA to provide national leadership to increase
environmental literacy. The program is based on ensuring that
environmental education, based on sound science and effective education
practices, is used as a tool to promote and protect human health and the
environment and to encourage student academic achievement. Core parts of
the program include approximately $200,000 for grants that support
projects to design, demonstrate, or disseminate practices, methods, or
techniques related to environmental education and training and the
implementation of the President's Environmental Youth Award program
which gives recognition to outstanding projects that promote local
environmental awareness amongst K-12 students. In addition, the
environmental education program runs both EPA's student website and the
Eco Student blog. While the website is geared towards providing kids,
students, parents and teachers links to materials that have been
evaluated and are considered educationally sound, the blog highlights
student's personal experiences and perspectives on topics pertaining to
environmental awareness and stewardship.
The environmental education program also assists in promoting both EPA's
school flag program which helps children, parents, school personnel and
the community be aware of daily air quality conditions using brightly
colored flags and EPA's OnCampus program which implement projects from
EPA programs to help green their campuses, promote environmental
awareness and carry out the EPA's mission to protect human health and
the environment.
