Associate Vice President for Research-Economic Development

The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology seeks to fill the twelve-month, full-time position of Associate Vice President for Research-Economic Development. The purpose of this position is to improve the economic welfare of western South Dakota and to provide an opportunity for the School of Mines and its faculty, staff, and students to realize the commercial potential of their innovations. The successful candidate will oversee the development of entrepreneurial initiatives and implement a system to manage intellectual property. The position requires an individual who will manage the intellectual property assets of the School of Mines, oversee the transfer and commercialize those assets, and be responsible for all associated contracts and agreements.

Minimum qualifications include five years experience in technology transfer or academic research, a PhD or Masters degree, and an outstanding record of achievement.

The School of Mines is a public state university offering baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral degrees in science and engineering with a student population of approximately 2,400 traditional and non-traditional learners representing 40 states and 27 countries. The university is located at the foot of the beautiful Black Hills in Rapid City, South Dakota's second largest city. Twenty-five miles from Mount Rushmore, Rapid City has a relatively mild climate, and the Black Hills offer numerous opportunities for summer and winter outdoor activities.
