League of Illinois Bicyclists Intern Position

The League of Illinois Bicyclists (www.bikelib.org) seeks a planning intern to assist with the updating and production of community bicycle maps. The project description is below, followed by qualifications we are looking for.

1) The initial task is to convert our Rockford area bike map (front and back) into a more professional looking color version, like our Decatur map . The project will require getting various GIS layers (road basemap, existing trails & other bikeways, water, schools and parks, etc.) for the area from RMAP, the area's MPO. The map will need updating with a few designated bikeways added since the first version. Like Decatur, the new map should also show sidewalk status for major roads. This will require online satellite imagery (Google Maps/Earth) viewing. The project will require brief interactions with the area's bike club, and with the MPO, to ask about other possible route changes from the first edition. It will also require interactions with other LIB staff about the printing and about ads to pay for the map. There likely will be at least a couple of iterations of edits as reviews are done. Stipend will be for $750.

2) If that goes well, we'll need the same done for our Springfield area bike map. There will be a few more route changes (to be specified) than for Rockford, but the sidewalk status of major roads is better known for Springfield (probably no Google Earth work). Otherwise, the process is the same. Stipend will be for $750.

3) Once these two maps are done, depending on the intern's availability and performance, the project will shift to creation of first edition map(s) of smaller metro area(s) in Illinois. Steps to determine preferred routes shown on the map include:

a) much more interaction with local cyclists,

b) studying of satellite imagery

c) collecting of other (online) data.

Preferably, this can be done without much (if any) field work at the location. Stipend will be negotiated at that time, according to expected time to complete.

This project requires access to ArcView/ArcGIS and one's own . Ideally, the finished map layout will be in a software format that LIB can edit ourselves (e.g., ArcView/ArcGIS), but we recognize another format (e.g. Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or inDesign) may be much easier for the intern to use. That's ok, as long as it's a software application commonly used by others (i.e., we can find someone to make edits).

We seek someone who is proficient in ArcView/ArcGIS, and the appropriate layout software of choice. Bicycle planning coursework or experience is a plus. Other qualities include being self directed, detail oriented and enthusiastic about LIB's mission. References and work samples are required.

The internship would start immediately after an intern is chosen, later this fall. It is an at-home (or at-school) position with most communication with LIB done by phone or email. The intern would have flexibility on their working hours, although we want to have both the Rockford and Springfield maps done in time for spring.

Please submit resumes to gin@bikelib.org by October 31st.
